CRM1-spike-mediated nuclear export of hepatitis B virus encapsidated viral RNA

Ching-Chun Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, it was discovered that the cellular CRM1 machinery can mediate the nuclear export of HBV core particles containing viral RNAs. Inhibition of nuclear export led to the accumulation of HBc particles in the nucleus, a significant reduction of viral RNAs in the cytoplasm, and barely detectable viral DNA. This finding provides a potential target for the treatment of HBV.

Hepatitis B virus virion secretion is a CRM1-spike-mediated late event

Summary: This study discovered that the tip of the spike of HBV core particles contains a complex sensor for the secretion of virions and naked capsids. The secretion of HBV virions is highly dependent on CRM1 and microtubules, unlike the secretion of naked capsids.

HBV Core Protein Is in Flux between Cytoplasmic, Nuclear, and Nucleolar Compartments

Smith Nair et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the hepatitis B virus core protein shows a time- and concentration-dependent sequential localization from the nucleolus to the nucleus and then to the cytoplasm during transfections and infections. This programmed movement of the core protein has important implications for understanding the mechanisms of antivirals targeting HBV capsid assembly.

Summary: HBcrAg is an emerging peripheral marker for monitoring intrahepatic viral activities in chronic HBV infection, comprising HBc, HBeAg, and PreC components with diverse proteolytic processing and genotype-specific variations. HBeAg is the predominant form in HBeAg-positive patients and shows positive correlations with PreC and HBcrAg levels, suggesting distinct functions and applications for each component in reflecting viral activities.
