Presence and stability of SARS-CoV-2 on environmental currency and money cards in Utah reveals a lack of live virus

Colleen R. Newey et al.

Summary: SARS-CoV-2 shows low stability on banknotes and higher stability on money cards, but no viable virus was detected on either. Therefore, using money cards to slow the spread of the virus may not be advisable.

Evidence for a semisolid phase state of aerosols and droplets relevant to the airborne and surface survival of pathogens

Erik Huynh et al.

Summary: The humidity-dependent phase changes of respiratory aerosols and droplets play a significant role in the survival of pathogens. This study reveals the formation of organic-based, semisolid phase states at intermediate humidity, which inhibit diffusion and disinfection processes. These findings highlight the importance of considering the semisolid phase in understanding the recovery of virus viability at low humidity.

Stability of SARS-CoV-2 on critical personal protective equipment

Samantha B. Kasloff et al.

Summary: The study provides the first comprehensive assessment of SARS-CoV-2 stability on experimentally contaminated personal protective equipment (PPE) widely used by healthcare workers and the general public. Results showed that the virus can persist for up to 21 days on certain materials, while rapidly degrading on cotton fabric within 24 hours. These findings highlight the importance of proper handling of contaminated PPE in high-risk settings and suggest the potential utility of cotton in limiting COVID-19 transmission.

Infectious SARS-CoV-2 Is Emitted in Aerosol Particles

Seth A. Hawks et al.

Summary: Research has shown that in golden Syrian hamsters, SARS-CoV-2 virus is emitted in infectious aerosol particles prior to and concurrent with the onset of mild disease symptoms, primarily contained within particles smaller than 5 micrometers. These findings indicate that SARS-CoV-2 is an airborne virus, supporting the use of ventilation to reduce transmission.

Mechanistic theory predicts the effects of temperature and humidity on inactivation of SARS-CoV-2 and other enveloped viruses

Dylan H. Morris et al.

Summary: In this study, the stability of SARS-CoV-2 on inert surfaces under different temperature and humidity conditions was measured, and a mechanistic model was developed to explain and predict how temperature and humidity affect virus inactivation. The results showed that the virus survives longest at low temperatures and extreme humidity, with implications for understanding virus transmission mechanisms and strategies to mitigate transmission risk. The mechanistic model accurately predicted measurements of five different human coronaviruses, suggesting shared mechanisms may affect stability across various viruses.
