Spatio-Temporally Efficient Coding Assigns Functions to Hierarchical Structures of the Visual System

Duho Sihn et al.

Summary: This article proposes a novel computational principle called spatio-temporally efficient coding for neural representations in visual hierarchical structures. This principle optimizes bidirectional information transmissions over hierarchical structures by minimizing temporal differences in neural responses and maximizing entropy in neural representations. Simulation results demonstrate that this coding principle can effectively assign and predict the functionality and phenomena of neural representations.

Feedforward and feedback interactions between visual cortical areas use different population activity patterns

Joao D. Semedo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the interaction of feedforward and feedback signaling in the brain, specifically in the visual cortex. The results suggest that feedforward and feedback signals rely on separate channels and exhibit different neuronal activity patterns.

Survey of spiking in the mouse visual system reveals functional hierarchy

Joshua H. Siegle et al.

Summary: The study explores the hierarchical organization of functional connectivity in the mammalian visual system, revealing correlations between neural activity and behavioral choice that increase along the hierarchy. This provides a foundation for understanding coding and signal propagation across hierarchically organized cortical and thalamic visual areas.

A quantitative description of macaque ganglion cell responses to natural scenes: the interplay of time and space

Manuel Schottdorf et al.

Summary: Research shows that primate ganglion cell responses to natural scenes are primarily driven by temporal variations in color and luminance caused by eye movements, with little influence from interaction with receptive field structure. Model predictions suggest that responses derive from the temporal pattern of stimulation from eye movements, reducing redundancy in the retinal signal. The magnocellular pathway is better suited to transmit detailed structure of natural scenes than the parvocellular pathway.

Predictive encoding of motion begins in the primate retina

Belle Liu et al.

Summary: Predictive motion encoding is an important aspect of visually guided behavior, with four parallel output pathways in the primate retina efficiently separating predictive information from nonpredictive information. The neural mechanisms responsible for detecting and encoding predictive motion correlations remain unclear, but nonlinear circuit mechanisms in the retina contribute to nearly optimal encoding of visual motion.
