Microglia and Microglia-Like Cells: Similar but Different

Miguel A. Cuadros et al.

Summary: Microglia are tissue-resident macrophages in the central nervous parenchyma, originating from yolk sac precursors. In addition to true microglia, there are also microglia-like cells from bone marrow that mainly appear under pathological conditions. These two types of cells share similarities but have differences, which are important for understanding their development and potential therapeutic strategies for diseases they are involved in.

Microglia phagocytose oligodendrocyte progenitor cells and synapses during early postnatal development: implications for white versus gray matter maturation

Muhammad Irfan et al.

Summary: Microglia play a crucial role in normal brain development by engulfing oligodendrocyte progenitor cells and regulating axon ensheathment to influence circuit development. Their unique amoeboid morphology undergoes changes over time, engulfing OPCs during a critical period to maintain proper myelin sheath ratios.

Phagocytic microglia in development: Are they what they eat?

Jonathan W. VanRyzin

Summary: Microglia, the innate immune cells of the brain, play a crucial role in proper brain development by engulfing other cells to shape the brain's architecture. The diversity of developmental phagocytosis is influenced by age, brain region, and substrate, and may drive changes in microglia phenotype. Ultimately, phagocytosis is equally important for shaping microglia function as it is for shaping the brain.
