Dialysis Patients Undergoing Total Hip Arthroplasty have Higher Rates of Morbidity and Mortality and Incur Greater Healthcare Costs: A National Database Study from 367,894 Patients

Vishesh Khanna et al.

Summary: Chronic dialysis has a significant impact on the outcomes of total hip arthroplasty (THA), with dialyzed patients having higher mortality, longer hospital stays, and higher costs. While other medical complications are comparable between dialysis and non-dialysis patients, dialysis patients are more likely to be discharged to another facility.

Hip Arthroplasty Outcomes in the Presence of Kidney Failure: A National Data Linkage Study

Ian A. Harris et al.

Summary: This study compared the rate of revision surgery and mortality following THA between patients who have kidney failure receiving long term dialysis or who had a kidney transplant and those who did not have kidney failure. The results showed that patients on dialysis had a higher risk of mortality after THA compared to those with a functioning kidney transplant or no kidney failure, but there was no early excess mortality due to the surgery.

Comparison of Total Knee Arthroplasty Outcomes Between Renal Transplant and End Stage Renal Disease Patients

Alexandra Stavrakis et al.

Summary: This study compares medical and surgical complications after primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and renal transplant (RT). It found that patients with RT have lower risks of developing pneumonia and wound dehiscence within 90 days of TKA, as well as lower risks of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) at 1 year and 2 years after surgery.

Outcomes of total hip arthroplasty in haemodialysis and renal transplant patients: systematic review

Ravi Popat et al.

Summary: Patients receiving haemodialysis or with a history of renal transplantation can expect good functional outcome following THA. However, the revision rate and deep infection rate are higher than would be expected in patients receiving THA for primary OA. Aseptic loosening is the most common reason for revision. Uncemented implants appear to be associated with lower failure rates both in haemodialysis patients and those who have had a transplant.

Dialysis patients have comparable results to patients who have received kidney transplant after total joint arthroplasty: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Te-Feng Arthur Chou et al.

Summary: Patients with ESRD who undergo TJA have slightly higher mortality, surgical site complication, and periprosthetic joint infection rates compared to the general population, with no significant risk factors identified in terms of age, sex, type of arthroplasty, or renal replacement therapy.

Mid-term clinical outcomes and complications of primary total knee arthroplasty in hemodialysis patients: a retrospective comparative cohort study

Sakumo Kii et al.

Summary: TKA improves AKSS-knee and function scores similarly for HD patients and non-HD patients. However, HD patients experience more complications after TKA, especially within the first month. Surgeons should inform HD patients of potential complications and closely monitor them following surgery.

Comparing Primary Total Hip Arthroplasty in Renal Transplant Recipients to Patients on Dialysis for End-Stage Renal Disease

Scott J. Douglas et al.

Summary: ESRD dialysis patients had higher rates of readmissions, mechanical complications, and revision surgery after THA compared to RTRs. Additionally, they incurred higher costs, suggesting that joint surgeons may consider delaying THA in suitable patients until after renal transplantation.
