Prevalence and risk factors for diabetic peripheral neuropathy, neuropathic pain and foot ulceration in the Persian Gulf region

Georgios Ponirakis et al.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence and risk factors of diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN), painful DPN, and diabetic foot ulceration (DFU) in patients with type 2 diabetes in secondary healthcare settings in Qatar, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia. The results showed a high prevalence of undiagnosed DPN, painful DPN, and those at risk of DFU in these patients, and identified several risk factors associated with these conditions.

Gait Parameters and Peripheral Neuropathy in Patients With Diabetes: A Meta-Analysis

Zhenchao Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between gait abnormality and diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) in diabetic patients. The results show that diabetic patients with DPN have lower gait velocity, shorter stride length, longer stride time, longer stance time, and higher maximum knee extension moment.

The Peripheral Neuropathy Prevalence and Characteristics Are Comparable in People with Obesity and Long-Duration Type 1 Diabetes

J. Z. M. Lim et al.

Summary: Peripheral neuropathy can occur in obesity independent of hyperglycemia. This study compared the prevalence and phenotype of peripheral neuropathy in obese individuals and those with long-standing type 1 diabetes. The findings suggest that metabolic factors associated with obesity play a significant role in the development of peripheral neuropathy.

Does plantar skin abrasion affect cutaneous mechanosensation?

Bert Wynands et al.

Summary: Plantar cutaneous mechanoreceptors play a critical role in postural control during walking and running. The mechanical properties of the epidermis, such as hardness and thickness, can affect plantar sensitivity. Abrasion of calluses improves touch sensitivity but has no effect on vibration sensitivity.

Automatic Segmentation of Monofilament Testing Sites in Plantar Images for Diabetic Foot Management

Tatiana Costa et al.

Summary: Diabetic peripheral neuropathy is a major complication of diabetes mellitus and leads to foot ulceration and amputations. This study aims to reduce human intervention in diabetic foot testing by using a computer vision-based automated system. The first part of the study successfully developed a system for automatically identifying testing sites.

Exploring the Relationship of Pain, Balance, Gait Function, and Quality of Life in Older Adults with Hip and Knee Pain

Mehmet Yanardag et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between hip and knee pain, balance, gait function, and quality of life in older adults. The results showed that pain in the lower extremities can impact quality of life and balance and gait function, with knee pain potentially having a greater effect on gait performance and quality of life. Nurses and physical therapists in nursing homes should be knowledgeable about pain and regularly monitor undiagnosed pain conditions in older adults' lower extremities.

Painful and non-painful diabetic neuropathy, diagnostic challenges and implications for future management

Troels S. Jensen et al.

Summary: Peripheral neuropathy is a common complication of diabetes, with the most common type being distal symmetric polyneuropathy. Diagnosis of diabetic neuropathy remains challenging due to lack of a single established diagnostic standard, leading to a reliance on a hierarchical system combining symptoms, signs, and confirmatory tests for research purposes. Treatments for diabetic neuropathy focus on glycemic control and symptomatic management, with a need for large randomized clinical trials to identify the most effective interventions for improved patient outcomes.

Differences and Similarities in Neuropathy in Type 1 and 2 Diabetes: A Systematic Review

Mar Sempere-Bigorra et al.

Summary: Diabetic neuropathy presents differences between type 1 and type 2 diabetes patients, with sensory changes being more prominent in type 2 diabetes, while neurological test variations are more common in type 1 diabetes patients. This review highlights the importance of understanding these differences for better clinical management and future research directions in the field.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of sensorimotor training on spatiotemporal parameters of gait in middle-aged and older adults with diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). The results showed that sensorimotor training improved gait parameters after eight weeks in both middle-aged and older DPN patients, regardless of age.

Sensory-Motor Mechanisms Increasing Falls Risk in Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy

Neil D. Reeves et al.

Summary: Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) leads to sensory and motor nerve damage, causing gait alterations and balance impairments, increasing the risk of falls. DPN patients exhibit pronounced balance impairments, muscle weakness and atrophy, as well as delayed neuromuscular response, all contributing to the higher risk of falls.
