Characterization of glyphosate-resistant Burkholderia anthina and Burkholderia cenocepacia isolates from a commercial Roundup® solution

Robert Hertel et al.

Summary: Glyphosate in Roundup inhibits the growth of plants and certain microorganisms. Two glyphosate-resistant bacteria were isolated from a Roundup solution, identified as Burkholderia anthina and Burkholderia cenocepacia, which cannot utilize glyphosate as a phosphorus source and produce glyphosate-sensitive EPSP synthases. The adaptation to glyphosate did not significantly increase antibiotic resistance in these bacteria, highlighting the genomic adaptability of Burkholderia species.

Molecular mechanisms underlying glyphosate resistance in bacteria

Robert Hertel et al.

Summary: Glyphosate is a nonselective herbicide widely used in agriculture for killing weeds and competing plants. Although considered safe for animals and humans, its intensive use can lead to environmental issues, such as negative impacts on biodiversity. Bacteria can evolve resistance to glyphosate through various mechanisms, highlighting their adaptability to anthropogenic substances.

An ABCC-type transporter endowing glyphosate resistance in plants

Lang Pan et al.

Summary: Glyphosate, the most widely used herbicide globally, has led to the evolution of resistance in many weed species. A study identified an ATP-binding cassette transporter, EcABCC8, that confers glyphosate resistance when expressed in transgenic rice. This transporter likely effluxes glyphosate in a plasma membrane-localized manner, reducing cellular glyphosate levels.
