Construction of Synthetic Microbial Ecosystems and the Regulation of Population Proportion

Wei Jiang et al.

Summary: With the advancement of synthetic biology, the design and implementation of microbial consortia have become increasingly important. However, the current limitations in our ability to quickly develop microbial consortia with desired dynamics and functions hinder the construction of synthetic ecosystems. In this study, we successfully constructed synthetic competitive and symbiotic ecosystems using Escherichia coli by employing modular design. Two ecological relationships were achieved through reconfiguring the layout between communication and effect modules. Additionally, we designed inducible synthetic ecosystems that allowed for regulation of subpopulation ratios. By introducing different inducers, a wide range of strain ratios between subpopulations was achieved, providing a larger volume of population regulation and simplified culture conditions. These synthetic ecosystems combine both basic and applied functionalities, expanding the toolkit for synthetic biology research.

The biofilm life cycle: expanding the conceptual model of biofilm formation

Karin Sauer et al.

Summary: This review introduces a model of bacterial biofilm formation and points out that the current five-step model fails to capture many aspects of biofilm physiology. The authors propose a more inclusive model that can accommodate various scenarios of biofilm formation.

Synthetic biology in biofilms: Tools, challenges, and opportunities

Peter Tran et al.

Summary: The field of synthetic biology aims to program living cells to perform novel functions, with bacteria as an attractive chassis organism. While significant progress has been made in bacterial synthetic biology, programming bacteria to operate in biofilms outside the laboratory setting remains a challenge. Understanding and harnessing the complex interactions within bacterial biofilms can enable the effective deployment of engineered bacteria in natural environments.
