Detection and Molecular Characterization of the SARS-CoV-2 Delta Variant and the Specific Immune Response in Companion Animals in Switzerland

Summary: This study aims to investigate SARS-CoV-2 infections in companion animals in close contact with COVID-19-positive owners, with a focus on the Delta variant. The results show that 11 cats and 3 dogs in 9 COVID-19-positive households tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 Delta variant. NGS data identified SNPs in the viral sequences of companion animals that occur at a higher frequency than in viral sequences of humans, as well as SNPs exclusively found in the animals investigated in this study.

Susceptibility of Pets to SARS-CoV-2 Infection: Lessons from a Seroepidemiologic Survey of Cats and Dogs in Portugal

Summary: Translation: Cats and dogs are susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 infection in natural conditions, as shown by a seroepidemiologic survey conducted in Portugal. Antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 were detected in 21.74% of cats and 4.73% of dogs, indicating the potential role of domestic animals in the global transmission of SARS-CoV-2. Human-to-animal and cat-to-cat transmission may also contribute to the spread of the virus among these animals.

SARS-CoV-2 infection in cats and dogs in infected mink farms

Summary: This study provides evidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection in 12 feral cats and 2 dogs from 10 infected mink farms. The research also shows that mink-to-cat transmission could occur at a rate of approximately 12%, while the origin of infections in dogs remains inconclusive. Interspecies transmission of SARS-CoV-2, particularly mink-to-cat transmission, should be considered as a potential risk for spread of the virus.

Risk Factors for SARS-CoV-2 Infection and Illness in Cats and Dogs

The results showed that 2% of dog swab specimens and 7.7% of cat swab specimens were PCR positive, and 41% of dog serum samples and 52% of cat serum samples were positive for SARS-CoV-2 IgG or IgM. In addition, the risk of seropositivity was higher for cats that slept on owners' beds and for dogs and cats that contracted a new illness.
