Long-term cardiovascular outcomes of COVID-19

Yan Xie et al.

Summary: Individuals with COVID-19, even those who were not hospitalized during the acute phase of the infection, are at an increased long-term risk of various cardiovascular disorders. A study using national healthcare databases found that beyond the first 30 days after infection, individuals with COVID-19 have an elevated risk of developing cerebrovascular disorders, heart diseases, and other cardiovascular complications. The risk increases depending on the care setting during the acute phase.

Cesar Fernandez-de-las-Penas et al.

Summary: This study investigated the differences in COVID-19 related symptoms and post-COVID symptoms between male and female COVID-19 survivors. It found that post-COVID symptoms were present in up to 60% of hospitalized COVID-19 survivors eight months after the infection, with female survivors experiencing more symptoms than males. Female sex was also associated with a higher risk of developing mood disorders and other long-term post-COVID symptoms.

Long COVID: A proposed hypothesis-driven model of viral persistence for the pathophysiology of the syndrome

Danilo Buonsenso et al.

Summary: Long COVID syndrome is characterized by persistent mild-to-moderate symptoms and medical complications after infection with SARS-CoV-2. This report proposes a model for the pathophysiology of long COVID, suggesting that the persistence of the virus or its molecular components leads to increased production of proinflammatory cytokines. This dysregulated immune response and chronic inflammation are hypothesized to form the basis of the syndrome.

CD209L/L-SIGN and CD209/DC-SIGN Act as Receptors for SARS-CoV-2

Razie Amraei et al.

Summary: The study identified CD209L and CD209 as receptors for SARS-CoV-2 entry into human cells. CD209L is prominently expressed in lung and kidney tissues and interacts with ACE2, potentially playing a role in SARS-CoV-2 infection. This finding may have implications for antiviral drug development in tissues where ACE2 expression is low or absent.
