Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy in patients with immunovirological control and at least 6 months of combination antiretroviral therapy

Paul Dalla-Pozza et al.

Summary: This study highlights that factors other than low CD4(+) cell count and high HIV viral load may be associated with the occurrence of PML in people with HIV. Further studies are warranted to investigate in greater detail the immunologic characteristics of people with HIV who develop PML despite immune-virological control.

Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy in an immunocompetent patient: A case report and review of literature

Shitiz Sriwastava et al.

Summary: Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is typically seen in immunocompromised patients, but our case demonstrates its rare occurrence in immunocompetent individuals. Furthermore, our literature review indicates that patients respond well to mirtazapine and intravenous pulse methylprednisolone (IVMP).

Rearrangement in the Hypervariable Region of JC Polyomavirus Genomes Isolated from Patient Samples and Impact on Transcription Factor-Binding Sites and Disease Outcomes

Michael P. Wilczek et al.

Summary: This study examines the mutations in the noncoding control region (NCCR) of JC polyomavirus (JCPyV) and their influence on viral transcription. It was found that the number of transcription factor binding sites (TFBS) significantly increased in patients with progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), especially in samples isolated from the cerebrospinal fluid. These findings suggest that the rearrangements in NCCR can impact disease outcome by altering viral gene transcription.

Summary: Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is a rapidly fatal demyelinating infection of the central nervous system caused by the JC virus, commonly found in immunocompromised individuals, with HIV being a major predisposing factor. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment are crucial for PML.

Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy in Relapsed Ph plus Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia after Cord Blood Transplantation and Blinatumomab Treatment: A Case Report and Literature Review

Taro Edahiro et al.

Summary: Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is a rare neurological disease caused by the reactivation of latent John Cunningham polyomavirus. Hematological disorders associated with immunomodulatory monoclonal antibodies and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) are risk factors for PML. The use of the novel immunomodulatory agent blinatumomab may increase the risk of developing PML.

Treatment Status and Healthcare Cost Trends for Patients with Multiple Sclerosis in Japan: A Claims Database Analysis

Izumi Kawachi et al.

Summary: The healthcare situation of multiple sclerosis (MS) in Japan has not been thoroughly investigated. A study using Japanese real-world data found that a considerable proportion of MS patients did not receive disease-modifying therapy (DMT) after the first diagnosis. Healthcare costs tended to fluctuate with longer duration since the first diagnosis, and long-term MS patients had higher hospitalization rates and healthcare costs.

The ICTV members voted on 174 taxonomic proposals, all of which were ratified by an absolute majority. The implementation of a new naming rule for virus species has resulted in over 60% of virus species being named in the 'Genus_name species_epithet' format.

Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy in multiple myeloma. A literature review and lessons to learn

Ioannis Koutsavlis

Summary: PML is a rare opportunistic infection with high mortality rate, often seen in immunosuppressed individuals. While primarily reported in patients with HIV/AIDS, there is a lack of review on PML in smouldering or treated myeloma patients. The underdiagnosis of PML in MM may indicate the need for more case reports to enrich knowledge in this field.

Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy and the spectrum of JC virus-related disease

Irene Cortese et al.

Summary: The Review provides an overview of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy and diseases caused by JC virus, discussing emerging immunotherapeutic approaches for increased survival. It highlights the need to reassess PML pathophysiology and clinical course, and the challenges of reversing underlying immunosuppression in the absence of antiviral therapies. Emerging treatments show promise but caution is advised to manage potential complications such as immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome and long-term neurological effects.

Database and Statistical Analyses of Transcription Factor Binding Sites in the Non-Coding Control Region of JC Virus

Kazuo Nakamichi et al.

Summary: This study aimed to create a database of JCV NCCR sequences annotated with TFBSs and statistically analyze the mutational pattern of JCV NCCR. The research found that in the NCCR of prototype JCV, there was a limited variety of TFBSs, with several TFBSs in regions C and E showing an overlapping trend. Data from BioGPS database indicated that genes encoding transcription factors binding to these TFBSs were expressed not only in the brain but also in peripheral sites.

Romona D. Govender et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess global trends in HIV/AIDS and found that while many countries have decreasing incidence rates, some countries like Russia, Ukraine, Portugal, Brazil, Spain and the United States have been experiencing rising rates of new cases since 2010. Globally, there are about 5000 new infections daily, with approximately 500 of them being children. Mortality rates are decreasing globally while prevalence continues to rise.
