Chemical control and insecticide resistance status of sand fly vectors worldwide

Sofia Balaska et al.

Summary: Sand flies, prominent vectors of Leishmania parasites causing leishmaniasis, are mainly found in tropical and subtropical regions. Control of sand flies through chemical methods is crucial for leishmaniasis prevention, as no human vaccines are available. While insecticide-based interventions, such as residual spraying and treated bed nets, are widely used, alternative control strategies are also being explored. The implementation of evidence-based insecticidal interventions, standardized bioassays, and molecular markers are necessary to effectively manage insecticide resistance and improve sand fly control efforts.
