Phylogenomic analysis of Syngnathidae reveals novel relationships, origins of endemic diversity and variable diversification rates

Josefin Stiller et al.

Summary: By sampling ultraconserved elements and taxon, we reconstructed the phylogeny of syngnathids and discovered previously overlooked species diversity and significant biogeographic patterns. The changes in diversification rates suggest possible links to declining global temperatures, the separation of the Atlantic and Pacific faunas, and associated environmental changes.

Global extinction risk for seahorses, pipefishes and their near relatives (Syngnathiformes)

Riley A. Pollom et al.

Summary: Despite heavy pressures from fishing, habitat degradation and climate change, a global assessment of extinction risk for approximately 300 species of syngnathiform fishes known as of 2017 has been conducted for the first time. At least 6% are threatened, with most being seahorses or freshwater pipefishes, and a significant number of species have insufficient data.

Phylogenomics and Historical Biogeography of Seahorses, Dragonets, Goatfishes, and Allies (Teleostei: Syngnatharia): Assessing Factors Driving Uncertainty in Biogeographic Inferences

Aintzane Santaquiteria et al.

Summary: The Syngnatharia group, which includes charismatic fish species like trumpetfishes, goatfishes, seahorses, and pipefishes, is widely distributed in tropical and warm-temperate regions, with a large portion of its diversity found in the Indo-Pacific. By applying an integrative phylogenomic approach, researchers were able to elucidate the evolutionary biogeography of syngnatharians, revealing their origins in the ancient Tethys Sea and subsequent expansion into the Indo-Pacific region. The study highlighted the importance of considering factors generating uncertainty in macroevolutionary and biogeographic inferences.
