A review of the role of biosurfactants in the biodegradation of hydrophobic organopollutants: production, mode of action, biosynthesis and applications

Carmen Sanchez

Summary: The increasing influence of human activity and industrialization has negatively affected the environment through pollution with organic contaminants. Microorganisms have the ability to degrade these pollutants, making them the most effective, inexpensive, and eco-friendly method for environmental remediation. Microorganisms produce natural surfactants that enhance the bioavailability of hydrophobic organopollutants, allowing them to be used as carbon and energy sources. The use of microbial surfactants has the potential to overcome challenges associated with contamination by hydrophobic organopollutants.
