Hydrologic modification and channel evolution degrades connectivity on the Atchafalaya River floodplain

Daniel E. Kroes et al.

Summary: The Atchafalaya River Basin, the largest forested wetland in the contiguous US, has experienced changes in hydrologic connectivity due to dredging and channel erosion. This study analyzed stage/discharge relationships, hydroperiods, discharge distribution, and channel cross-sections to find that much of the floodplain no longer receives sufficient discharge, resulting in stagnancy and hypoxia in the wetland. The confinement of discharge to a large channel also limits the system's ability to respond to sea-level rise and subsidence.

Summary: The study found that floodplain lakes in the Usumacinta River Basin are threatened by water resource development. There are significant differences in trophic dynamics among lakes, with fish in isolated lakes relying predominantly on phytoplankton and fish in connected lakes relying on aquatic macrophytes.

Fisheries management influences phytoplankton biomass of Amazonian floodplain lakes

Joao Vitor Campos-Silva et al.

Summary: Our study investigates the importance of bottom-up versus top-down drivers of phytoplankton biomass in tropical floodplain lakes. The results show that community-based fisheries management, controlling apex predators, is a strong predictor of phytoplankton biomass in dry seasons, while top-down forces play a significant role in primary productivity in tropical lakes. Management practices should consider both bottom-up and top-down factors to ensure biodiversity protection and sustainable fisheries yields.
