Sensitivity of tidal hydrodynamics to varying bathymetric configurations in a multi-inlet rapidly eroding salt marsh system: A numerical study

Mithun Deb et al.

Summary: This article describes the development of a high-resolution, two-dimensional hydrodynamic model for a multi-inlet rapidly eroding tidal wetland. The model uses the finite-volume, primitive equation community ocean model (FVCOM) and is validated through surveys and measurements. The model is then used to analyze the hydrodynamics of major inlet entrances and the effects of dredging and channel deepening. The study shows how these changes can affect the circulation of the connected system and trigger marsh erosion.

Morpho-sedimentary evolution of a microtidal meandering channel driven by 130 years of natural and anthropogenic modifications of the Venice Lagoon (Italy)

Alvise Finotello et al.

Summary: Tidal channels play a crucial role in the distribution of sediments and nutrients, affecting the ecomorphodynamics of tidal landscapes. The Venice Lagoon in Italy provides a unique opportunity to study the evolution of tidal channels and their relationship with hydrodynamic changes. This study reveals the feedback mechanisms between rising sea levels, human interventions, and the morpho-sedimentary evolution of meandering tidal channels in the lagoon.

Salt-marsh retreat on different time scales: Issues and prospects from a 5-year monitoring campaign in the Venice Lagoon

Riccardo A. Mel et al.

Summary: This study investigates the lateral evolution of salt marsh margins in the Venice Lagoon at different time scales, combining marsh retreat measurements, remote sensing data, and numerical modeling. The study confirms a linear relationship between erosion rate and wave power at different time scales, with a decreasing slope at higher elevation of the marsh bank, explaining the occurrence of cantilever profiles. The study also highlights the major issues affecting in-situ monitoring campaigns.

Loss of geomorphic diversity in shallow tidal embayments promoted by storm-surge barriers

Davide Tognin et al.

Summary: Coastal flooding prevention measures, such as storm-surge barriers, are widely adopted globally due to rising sea levels. However, their effects on shallow tidal embayment morphodynamics are poorly understood. Field data and modeling results from the microtidal Venice Lagoon reveal that artificial reduction of water levels leads to increased sediment resuspension and decreased salt marsh accretion.

Seaward expansion of salt marshes maintains morphological self-similarity of tidal channel networks

Zhicheng Yang et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the morphological evolution of tidal channel networks (TCNs) found in salt marshes characterized by active lateral expansion. It shows that marsh seaward expansion limits headward channel growth and prompts the evolution of self-similar TCNs, while not significantly altering drainage properties. These findings contribute to our understanding of coastal landscape ecomorphodynamics and inform strategies for conservation and restoration.

Biogeomorphic modeling to assess the resilience of tidal-marsh restoration to sea level rise and sediment supply

Olivier Gourgue et al.

Summary: This paper applies a biogeomorphic model to assess the development and resilience of restored tidal marshes. The model demonstrates that restored tidal marshes can keep pace with sea level rise and their resilience is more sensitive to sediment availability. Restoration design options can steer marsh resilience and affect biogeomorphic development. This study showcases the importance of biogeomorphic modeling in supporting restoration design for sustainable tidal-marsh development.

Summary: The closure of the Venice Lagoon in October 2020 for the first time in history due to the Mo.S.E. system's operation not only prevented flooding but also led to unprecedented hydrodynamic scenarios. The closure facilitated a better understanding of wind effects on tide propagation, as well as the evaluation of gate operations' impact on seaward disturbance and infiltration into the lagoon.

Marsh resilience to sea-level rise reduced by storm-surge barriers in the Venice Lagoon

Davide Tognin et al.

Summary: Salt marshes are important coastal habitats that provide ecosystem services, but they are threatened by rising sea levels and sediment deprivation. Expansion of coastal flooding protection infrastructures, such as storm-surge barriers, could also pose a serious threat to salt marshes. Observations from the Venice Lagoon show that storm surges play a major role in salt-marsh sedimentation, but the operations of storm-surge barriers significantly reduce the supply of sediment to the marshes.

Astronomic link to anomalously high mean sea level in the northern Adriatic Sea

Arnoldo Valle-Levinson et al.

Summary: Annual mean sea-level records in the northern Adriatic Sea over nearly 130 years show that the interannual variability is influenced by lunar precessions and solar activity. By fitting harmonics related to these factors, it was possible to explain more than 75% of the sea-level variability and predict future trends in the region. Additionally, anomalously high mean sea levels were observed during most of the high peaks of solar cycles in the area.

Modeling Marsh Dynamics Using a 3-D Coupled Wave-Flow-Sediment Model

Tarandeep S. Kalra et al.

Summary: Salt marshes are dynamic biogeomorphic systems that respond to external physical factors and internal processes. This study implemented new marsh dynamic processes in the COAWST model and verified them through idealized domains. Simulations showed that vertical accretion in marshes is dominated by organic deposition, while mineral estuarine sediments primarily deposit along the channel edges. The model's ability to predict sediment fate can be extended to simulate the impacts of future storms and sea-level rise scenarios on salt marsh ecomorphodynamics.

How long the Mo.SE barriers will be effective in protecting all urban settlements within the Venice Lagoon? The wind setup constraint

Riccardo A. Mel et al.

Summary: The latest IPCC report warns that sea level rise caused by climate change will increase flooding frequency in coastal areas throughout this century. Venice Lagoon is particularly vulnerable due to the presence of historic urban settlements. An innovative mobile flap gate system (Mo.S.E.) has been constructed across the lagoon inlets to protect Venice from flooding, but challenges remain in managing the barriers effectively, including timing and frequency of operation. The study proposes a new strategy to optimize gate operation by determining the shortest closure duration to prevent flooding in all urban settlements, and finds that the Mo.S.E. system may fail to control flood events with a relative sea level rise of +0.40 m, highlighting the need for further measures to balance flood protection with other activities in the lagoon ecosystem.

Sea-level rise in Venice: historic and future trends (review article)

Summary: The city of Venice and its surrounding lagoonal ecosystem are highly vulnerable to variations in relative sea level, with historical evidence showing that subsidence has been a significant contributor to sea-level rise in Venice. Recent studies have found that after correcting for subsidence effects, the average rate of sea-level rise in Venice is 1.23 mm/year, with higher rates observed in more recent years.

Onset of runaway fragmentation of salt marshes

Orencio Duran Vinent et al.

Summary: Research shows that the threshold for marsh fragmentation along coastal areas is primarily related to tidal range, and sediment supply is relevant only when tides are enough to transport sediment to the marsh interior. Organic matter accumulation controls the threshold of relative sea level rise in marsh ecosystems, explaining the fragmentation of microtidal marshes.
