Confronting the water potential information gap

Kimberly A. Novick et al.

Summary: Water potential plays a crucial role in the functioning of leaves, roots, and microbes, as well as driving water flows in the soil-plant-atmosphere system. However, the measurement of water potential in situ is rare and observations of plant water potential are limited and not widely accessible. This hinders our understanding of biophysical responses to moisture stress and introduces uncertainty into hydrologic and land-surface models. In this paper, the potential gains of continuous and discoverable observations of water potential are outlined, along with improvements in sensor technologies and strategies for data aggregation. Linking representative site-level observations to remote sensing proxies is also highlighted as a novel opportunity. Overall, this paper provides a roadmap for improving our understanding of biophysical processes through continuous and discoverable observations of water potential.

Development of a New Pedotransfer Function Addressing Limitations in Soil Hydraulic Models and Observations

Yunquan Wang et al.

Summary: This paper presents a simple method for predicting soil hydraulic properties in dry conditions, which overcomes the limitations of existing methods. By applying this method to a new soil hydraulic model, more accurate predictions of soil water content and hydraulic conductivity can be achieved.

Analyzing dual porosity in soil hydraulic properties using soil databases for pedotransfer function development

Yonggen Zhang et al.

Summary: Current databases of soil hydraulic properties (SHPs) have been used to develop pedotransfer functions (PTFs) for estimating water retention capacity. However, natural soils often exhibit bimodal to multimodal pore-size distributions. This study analyzed widely spread databases and found that 65% of the samples showed bimodal pore-size distribution. The commonly used Mualem-van Genuchten (MvG) expression was unable to accurately predict the observed unsaturated hydraulic conductivity. Only a joint fitting of measured water retention capacity and hydraulic conductivity functions provided parameter estimates that described unsaturated hydraulic conductivity for both unimodal and bimodal soils.

Sigmoidal water retention function with improved behaviour in dry and wet soils

Gerrit Huibert de Rooij et al.

Summary: This study improved the SWRC by connecting the sigmoid midsection of the parameterizations to a logarithmic dry section, resulting in better usability in dry conditions. The new curve showed more robustness compared to the original curve and the first improvement, and produced smaller amounts of more evenly distributed deep drainage.
