Century-Long Homogenization of Algal Communities Is Accelerated by Nutrient Enrichment and Climate Warming in Lakes and Reservoirs of the North Temperate Zone

Shouliang Huo et al.

Summary: This study explores the diversity and assembly patterns of eukaryotic algal (EA) and cyanobacterial (CYA) communities over a century in seven lakes and reservoirs in the North Temperate Zone. The results show temporal homogenization of algal communities within lakes, likely due to historical legacies, intensified anthropogenic activities, and climate warming. Both deterministic and stochastic processes play a role in algal community assembly.

Patterns of eukaryotic diversity from the surface to the deep-ocean sediment

Tristan Cordier et al.

Summary: Remote deep-ocean sediment ecosystems have high biodiversity, with benthic communities being three times more diverse than pelagic realms. These communities are influenced by ocean basins and particulate organic carbon flux from the upper ocean. The presence of plankton DNA in the DOS predicts variations in surface POC export and reveals previously overlooked taxa that may play a role in the biological carbon pump.

Spatial and temporal distributions of microplastics and their macroscopic relationship with algal blooms in Chaohu Lake, China

Huatai Liu et al.

Summary: Microplastics, pollutants less than 5 mm in size, are found everywhere and have been shown to have a relationship with algal bloom density in Chaohu Lake. The distribution of microplastics in the lake is influenced by various factors, and they can both promote and inhibit the growth of algae depending on the stage of algal bloom.

Sedimentary microeukaryotes reveal more dispersal limitation and form networks with less connectivity than planktonic microeukaryotes in a highly regulated river

Juan Chen et al.

Summary: The study showed distinct differences in community composition between planktonic and sedimentary microeukaryotes, as well as between natural and regulated sites in the river. Environmental and spatial variables were associated with patterns in community composition, with neutral models fitting the distributions well. Co-occurrence network analysis revealed different connectivity and interaction patterns between planktonic and sedimentary microeukaryotic networks, with keystone species playing essential roles in stability.

Wetland Area Change from 1986-2016 in the Dongting Lake Watershed at the Sub-Watershed Scale

Mingming Geng et al.

Summary: Wetlands are at high risk of degradation worldwide, but the driving mechanisms at different spatial and temporal scales vary. This study found that the total area of natural wetlands in the Dongting Lake Watershed (DTLW) decreased over the study period, with meteorological changes being the most influential factor at the watershed scale, while anthropogenic activities were more important at the sub-watershed scale.

Climate and Nutrient-Driven Regime Shifts of Cyanobacterial Communities in Low-Latitude Plateau Lakes

Hanxiao Zhang et al.

Summary: This study found that nutrient enrichment and climate warming drive shifts in cyanobacterial communities in low-latitude plateau lakes, with the tipping point being aquatic total phosphorus. The dynamics of cyanobacterial communities were influenced by aquatic TP levels and air temperature, with a shift in dominance depending on the state of the lake.

Selective constraints on global plankton dispersal

Ben A. Ward et al.

Summary: Marine microbial communities are highly interconnected assemblages of organisms shaped by ecological drift, natural selection, and dispersal. Environmental selection places strong constraints on global dispersal, while barriers to dispersal play a key role in structuring marine communities, enhancing global biodiversity and the importance of local historical contingencies.

Ecological impacts of freshwater algal blooms on water quality, plankton biodiversity, structure, and ecosystem functioning

Cihelio Alves Amorim et al.

Summary: Harmful algal blooms, particularly those dominated by Cyanobacteria, have significant negative impacts on freshwater biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, affecting water quality, plankton structure, and resource use efficiency of phytoplankton and zooplankton. The loss of biodiversity due to algal blooms results in decreased ecosystem functioning, with cascading effects on plankton dynamics.

Internal loop sustains cyanobacterial blooms in eutrophic lakes: Evidence from organic nitrogen and ammonium regeneration

Jingya Xue et al.

Summary: Algal bloom species can rely on internal regenerated ammonium for growth during nitrogen-limited periods. In a eutrophic lake, it was found that NH4+ regeneration rates were higher in summer than in winter and correlated significantly with total phytoplankton biomass, Cyanophyta biomass, and other organic and nitrogen concentrations. Cyanophyta was identified as the dominant phylum accelerating NH4+ regeneration during summer months.

Microbial community coalescence: does it matter in the Three Gorges Reservoir?

Yu Gao et al.

Summary: The research analyzed microbial communities in the Three Gorges Reservoir, revealing differences and coalescence levels between water and sediment microbial communities. Sediment communities were found to be more diverse than water communities, with strong intra-medium coalescence and weak inter-medium coalescence observed. The study identified 50 keystone species showing stronger coalescence and forming an accumulating pattern from upstream to downstream, emphasizing their importance in the ecological network.

Spatiotemporal dynamics of succession and growth limitation of phytoplankton for nutrients and light in a large shallow lake

Xuemei Liu et al.

Summary: Understanding the growth and competition of phytoplankton under co-varying environmental conditions is crucial for the restoration of aquatic ecosystems. Different phytoplankton functional groups are limited by environmental factors such as light, nitrogen, and phosphorus, with total suspended solids suppressing the growth of some species but favoring others, and N:P ratios influencing the dominance of non-N-fixing or N-fixing cyanobacteria. These findings suggest that maintaining specific nutrient and TSS levels in lakes is essential for sustaining a good ecological status and improving water quality management practices.

Co-existing water and sediment bacteria are driven by contrasting environmental factors across glacier-fed aquatic systems

Liyan Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found distinct differences in bacterial communities between water and sediment, mainly influenced by changes in nitrogen compounds and pH. Water bacterial diversity was more affected by evapotranspiration, elevation, and mean annual temperature. Sediment harbored the greatest bacterial diversity and a wider range of bacterial phyla.

Assessing cyanobacterial frequency and abundance at surface waters near drinking water intakes across the United States

Megan M. Coffer et al.

Summary: This study is the first comprehensive assessment of cyanobacterial frequency and abundance near drinking water intakes across the United States. Satellite imagery was found to be effective in monitoring cyanobacterial blooms and providing information for drinking water treatment operators; in 2019, the average bloom frequency was 2% and reached up to 100%, indicating the need for long-term satellite monitoring data to evaluate environmental changes.

Low shifts in salinity determined assembly processes and network stability of microeukaryotic plankton communities in a subtropical urban reservoir

Yuanyuan Mo et al.

Summary: The study found that an increase in salinity alters plankton community composition and decreases diversity. Salinity change influences community assembly through regulating the balance between deterministic and stochastic processes, with higher robustness of core plankton subnetworks at low-salinity levels and satellite subnetworks at medium-/high-salinity levels. The results suggest that even small increases in salinity at low levels can exert selective pressure on microeukaryotic plankton diversity and alter community assembly mechanisms and network stability.

Transcriptomic sequencing reveals the response of Dunaliella salina to copper stress via the increased photosynthesis and carbon mechanism

Na Ling et al.

Summary: Copper can both stimulate and inhibit growth and photosynthesis in green algae, with differentially expressed genes related to photosynthesis, carbon assimilation, and carbohydrate mechanisms being significantly up-regulated under copper stress. This study highlights the potential for utilizing D. salina as a functional food due to its enhanced growth and photosynthesis under copper stress.
