Photodegradation, toxicity and density functional theory study of pharmaceutical metoclopramide and its photoproducts

Dario Dabic et al.

Summary: Metoclopramide, a pharmaceutical compound, was studied for its photolysis and toxicological assessment in this research. The experiments showed that metoclopramide can easily degrade in different water matrices, with faster degradation at pH = 7. Various organic and inorganic substances present in natural water were found to inhibit the degradation process.

Overarching issues on relevant pesticide transformation products in the aquatic environment: A review

Kyriaki Anagnostopoulou et al.

Summary: The intensive use of pesticides in agricultural production has led to an increase in their presence in the aquatic environment, posing potential risks to both the environment and human health. Pesticides can undergo biotic and abiotic processes in water bodies, resulting in the formation of transformation products (TPs) that may be more toxic than the original compounds. Although research on pesticide TPs is still in its early stages, significant efforts have been made in European countries, particularly in France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Greece, and Spain. Research on pesticide TPs in Asia, North America, and South America is relatively limited. This review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the global occurrence, fate, toxicity, and analytical challenges associated with pesticide TPs in surface, ground, and wastewaters, contributing to a better understanding of the environmental issues related to TP formation.

Suspect and target screening of emerging pesticides and their transformation products in an urban river using LC-QTOF-MS

Yangping Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the presence of emerging pesticides and their transformation products in an urban river in Beijing mainly supplied with treated wastewater. A total of 30 pesticides and 20 TPs were identified, with some compounds showing concentrations higher than their parent substances.

UV/chlorine process for degradation of benzothiazole and benzotriazole in water: Efficiency, mechanism and toxicity evaluation

Tao Yang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that the degradation of Benzothiazole and Benzotriazole by UV/chlorine involved various reactive species and radicals, with different dominant mechanisms depending on the pH conditions. The efficiency of degradation was significantly influenced by pH values. Seven disinfection by-products were identified during the degradation process, with trichloromethane being the main by-product. The toxicity assessment revealed that detoxification of BZA could be achieved by UV/chlorine, while the toxicity of BTZ was increased due to the formation of intermediates.

Significant role of iron on the fate and photodegradation of enrofloxacin

Ivan Sciscenko et al.

Summary: The study compared the photolysis of enrofloxacin with and without complexation with iron under simulated sunlight irradiation. Iron complexation was found to enhance the photostability of enrofloxacin. Efficient degradation of the FQ-iron complex was achieved with the addition of H2O2.

Degradation of difenoconazole in water and soil: Kinetics, degradation pathways, transformation products identification and ecotoxicity assessment

Yanli Man et al.

Summary: The laboratory experiments revealed that difenoconazole undergoes oxidation, dechlorination, and hydroxylation reactions in the environment, leading to the formation of various transformation products. Four novel transformation products showed lower acute toxicity compared to difenoconazole, but were predicted to be chronically very toxic to fish, posing a potential threat to aquatic ecosystems.

In Silico Supported Nontarget Analysis of Contaminants of Emerging Concern: Increasing Confidence in Unknown Identification in Wastewater and Surface Waters

Luisa F. Angeles et al.

Summary: The study utilized liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) to conduct nontarget analysis of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in wastewater and surface water samples from three locations in Manila, Philippines. A total of 157 compounds were identified, including antibiotics, antifungal, pesticides, and industrial chemicals, highlighting the importance of using tools and software for annotating HRMS data and reporting detections according to a standardized classification system.
