Electrochemical-based approaches for the treatment of forever chemicals: Removal of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from wastewater

K. Sivagami et al.

Summary: Electrochemical methods are superior in treating recalcitrant water borne pollutants due to their high efficiency and treatment rate. Electro-oxidation (EO) is a recent development that completely mineralizes non-biodegradable organic matter and eliminates some inorganic species, making it a robust and versatile technology. The treatment efficiency is determined by electrode materials, electrolyte concentration, pH, and current density applied in electrochemical processes.

Mechanistic Understanding of Superoxide Radical-Mediated Degradation of Perfluorocarboxylic Acids

Lu Bai et al.

Summary: The study investigated the kinetics and mechanisms of O-2(center dot-)-mediated PFCAs attenuation, with results indicating bimolecular nucleophilic substitution as the most likely thermodynamically feasible mechanism. As O-2(center dot-) approaches PFCA, the C-F bond is spontaneously stretched, leading to bond cleavage. The solvation mechanism was elucidated, showing that although less polar solvents enhance O-2(center dot-) nucleophilicity, they also decrease PFCAs desolvation process.

Efficient persistent organic pollutant removal in water using MIL-metal-organic framework driven Fenton-like reactions: A critical review

Malcom Frimpong Dapaah et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the application of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in the degradation of water pollutants, particularly the higher Fenton-like activity of MIL-MOFs towards persistent organic pollutants (POPs). The review examines the structural modification of MIL-MOF catalysts, the influence of reaction parameters, and discusses the practical applications and current situation of Fenton-like reactions. Challenges and future prospects are also provided to guide researchers in wastewater treatment and crystalline material application.

Transformation of phenol and nitrobenzene by superoxide radicals: Kinetics and mechanisms

Xiaobo Min et al.

Summary: This study investigated the kinetics and mechanisms of the superoxide radical-mediated transformation of two monosubstituted aromatic contaminants with different electronic effects. The results showed that the superoxide radical had weak activity and low selectivity. However, its removal capacity for both contaminants was limited.

Mechanistic insight into superoxide radical-mediated degradation of carbon tetrachloride in aqueous solution: An in situ spectroscopic and computational study

Zonghao Luo et al.

Summary: A method to generate O-2(center dot-) was developed, and its reaction kinetics and mechanism with CCl4 were investigated. The results showed that O-2(center dot-) exhibited lower reactivity towards CCl4 compared to other radicals, with nucleophilic substitution as the major pathway and solvation effect playing an important role in the reaction.

Cost comparison of advanced oxidation processes for wastewater treatment using accumulated oxygen-equivalent criteria

Emmanuel Mousset et al.

Summary: Advanced oxidation processes have been widely studied for their effectiveness in removing biorefractory pollutants from wastewater. However, there is a lack of suitable methods to compare the performance of different AOPs. This paper proposes a novel criterion, the accumulated oxygen-equivalent chemical-oxidation dose (AOCD), to systematically compare diverse AOPs.
