Metagenomic insights into quorum sensing in membrane-aerated biofilm reactors for phenolic wastewater treatment

Yanzhuo Hu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the QS-related genes in MABR for phenolic wastewater treatment through high-throughput metagenomic sequencing. Results showed that the biofilms were potentially regulated by the AHL-mediated QS and c-di-GMP-mediated QS systems, indicating their importance in biofilm resistance to phenolics and removal of phenolic contaminants.

Petrochemical condensate treatment by membrane aerated biofilm reactors: A pilot study

Irina Veleva et al.

Summary: The OxyMem membrane aerated biofilm reactor (MABR) pilot, consisting of two 54 L reactors in series, demonstrated high removal efficiency and operational performance in treating real petrochemical condensate, with stable treatment efficiency of complex feed and diverse biofilm development. The pilot achieved oxygen transfer rate (OTR), oxygen transfer efficiency (OTE), and specific aeration efficiency (SAE) values that outcompete conventional activated sludge (CAS) processes, indicating the potential of MABRs to achieve higher OTE in treating petrochemical streams.

Summary: A strain of E2 degrading bacteria, identified as Ochrobactrum sp. strain FJ1, was isolated from activated sludge and showed efficient degradation of E2. The addition of methanol as an additional carbon source increased the biomass of the strain, but slightly inhibited E2 degradation efficiency.

Comparison between Thermophilic and Mesophilic Membrane-Aerated Biofilm Reactors-A Modeling Study

Duowei Lu et al.

Summary: The concept of thermophilic membrane-aerated biofilm reactor (ThMABR), which combines the advantages of conventional MABR and thermophilic aerobic biological treatment, has been studied through modeling. The results indicate that ThMABR has significant advantages over mesophilic MABR in terms of increased oxygen and pollutant flux into biofilms and biodegradation rates, and there exists an optimal biofilm thickness for maximum oxygen and substrate fluxes into the biofilm.

Structural characteristics and microbial function of biofilm in membrane-aerated biofilm reactor for the biodegradation of volatile pyridine

Peng Zheng et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated the effective removal of pyridine-contaminated wastewater using bubble-free aeration membrane biofilm reactor (MABR) and highlighted its potential in treating recalcitrant pollutants. The results showed that high pyridine loading thickened the biofilm but did not cause detachment, and enhanced the metabolic efficiency of degradation pathways. The identified functional genes were mainly associated with Pseudomonas and Delftia, indicating their potential role in pyridine biodegradation.

Assessing the performance and microbial structure of biofilms in membrane aerated biofilm reactor for high p-nitrophenol concentration treatment

Jiayi Tong et al.

Summary: In this study, the membrane aerated biofilm reactor (MABR) was used to degrade high concentrations of PNP without external carbon sources. The MABR showed a strong shockproof ability and achieved high removal efficiencies of PNP and COD. The high-throughput sequencing results revealed the presence of CPR bacteria, which played a key role in the degradation of high concentrations of PNP.

Enhanced removal of cephalexin and sulfadiazine in nitrifying membrane-aerated biofilm reactors

Bingzheng Wang et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the removal of two antibiotics in nitrifying MABR systems, finding high efficiency in degrading CFX and SDZ. Exposure led to increased removal rates but decreased efficiencies, yet nitrification performance and microbial community structure remained stable. The nitrifying MABR process shows promise for efficient antibiotic removal from domestic wastewater.

Lower Funneling Pathways in Scedosporium Species

Wilfried Poirier et al.

Summary: The study found that the adaptation mechanisms of Scedosporium species to their environment involve specific catabolism pathways, particularly the lower funneling pathways. These pathways open the aromatic ring of molecules through dioxygenases, leading to the tricarboxylic acid cycle. When cultivated in the presence of lignin or gentisic acid as the sole carbon source, the genes of the gentisic acid cluster in Scedosporium species were markedly overexpressed, indicating their involvement in Scedosporium adaptation to the environment.
