NirS-type denitrifying bacteria in aerobic water layers of two drinking water reservoirs: Insights into the abundance, community diversity and co-existence model

Haihan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the abundance of nirS gene and the structure of denitrifying bacterial community in two drinking water reservoirs using qPCR and sequencing techniques. The results showed differences in water quality between the two reservoirs, and Paracoccus sp. R-24615 and Staphylococcus sp. N23 were identified as keystones species. Additionally, water quality and sampling time significantly influenced the denitrifying bacterial community.

Role of nitrite reductase in N2O production under aerobic conditions: An index for predicting the intensity of N2O production

Rui Yang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that Nir activity can be used as an indicator for characterizing changes in N2O emissions. The N2O emission and its proportion were least at an aeration intensity of 0.8 L.min(-1), while Nir activity was relatively high at an aeration intensity of 0.6 L.min(-1). Additionally, Nir activity showed a high affinity for nitrite and was not directly affected by DO.

Heterotrophic and mixotrophic cultivation of microalgae to simultaneously achieve furfural wastewater treatment and lipid production

Pengfei Cheng et al.

Summary: Furfural wastewater treatment is a significant concern in modern chemical production. Traditional methods for wastewater treatment prove inadequate. This study investigates the use of Chlorella pyrenoidosa for growth and pollutants removal in both heterotrophic and mixotrophic cultures. Results show that 10-fold dilution yields the highest biomass and removal efficiency for COD and TN. However, TP removal is inconsistent in both mixotrophic and heterotrophic modes. Algal cells experience faster growth when 0.25 g/L NaNO3 is added to the FWW compared to high nitrogen levels. In heterotrophic conditions, the total lipid content is 18.53%, which surpasses the values in mixotrophy at a concentration of 0.75 g/L NaNO3. The varying carbon assimilation mechanisms of the algal cells contribute to differences in cell growth and pollutant removal under different culture modes.

Bing Zhang et al.

Summary: This study proposed a novel strategy using algal-mycelial pellets (AMPs) as primary nuclei to accelerate the development of a self-sustaining symbiotic ABGS system. The results showed that this strategy significantly shortened the granulation time and resulted in an ABGS with excellent performance in wastewater treatment.

Application of external carbon source in heterotrophic denitrification of domestic sewage: A review

Xinrong Fu et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the effects of liquid, solid, and gaseous carbon sources on denitrification, finding that sodium acetate is the preferred external carbon source, biodegradable polymers perform better in solid-phase denitrification but have a higher price, and methane can be used as a gaseous carbon source. Liquid carbon sources are better controlled and utilized, and high carbon to nitrogen ratio, hydraulic retention time, and temperature promote denitrification.

Yafang Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, an integrated algal/partial nitrification/anammox biofilm system (IAPNABS) was constructed through light cultivation, and the main microbial species and nitrogen metabolic processes in different biofilm layers were determined using metagenomic analysis. The results showed that the system had efficient nitrogen removal capacity and did not require additional oxygen supply.

Influence of C/N ratios on treatment performance and biomass production during co-culture of microalgae and activated sludge

Bao-Trong Dang et al.

Summary: This study established a synergistic interaction between microalgae and activated sludge to mitigate pollutants and produce biomass. Results showed that a C/N ratio of 5:1 resulted in the highest biomass productivity and pollutant removal rates. Activated sludge played a crucial role in improving microalgae tolerance and boosting nitrification and denitrification.

Effect of dissolved oxygen on high C/N wastewater treatment in moving bed biofilm reactors based on heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification: Nitrogen removal performance and potential mechanisms

Xueying Bian et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of different dissolved oxygen concentrations on nitrogen removal in high C/N wastewater treatment. The results showed that dissolved oxygen concentration significantly affected the efficiency of total nitrogen removal. Within a certain range, increasing dissolved oxygen concentration improved the removal efficiency, but excessively high concentrations did not further promote nitrogen removal. The influence of dissolved oxygen concentration on nitrogen removal was influenced by the combined action of functional bacteria and electron flow.

Bacterial-algae biofilm enhance MABR adapting a wider COD/N ratios wastewater: Performance and mechanism

Han Zhang et al.

Summary: The study constructed a bacterial-algae biofilm supporting membrane aerated biofilm reactor (MABAR), which showed significantly improved total nitrogen (TN) removal efficiency compared to MABR, regardless of the COD/N ratio. Nitrification inhibition tests and redundancy analysis revealed that algae assimilation contributed to NH4+-N removal in MABAR and changed the nitrogen removal route, giving MABAR excellent adaptability and impact resistance.
