Yunyun Li et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of a new type of water flocculant in removing four different pesticides from Yangtze River water and mitigating membrane fouling. The results showed that the water flocculant had efficient pesticide removal capabilities and reduced membrane fouling, outperforming traditional inorganic coagulants.

In-situ utilization of membrane foulants (FeOx+MnOx) for the efficient membrane cleaning

Boda Li et al.

Summary: Preoxidation-ultrafiltration process is an effective method for removing Fe2+ and Mn(2+), but the presence of Fe2+, Mn2+, and organics in the feed can cause severe membrane fouling. This study proposes a novel FeOx+MnOx+H2O2 membrane cleaning method which achieves high membrane flux recovery and removal of membrane foulants within a short time. The outstanding performance of the system is mainly attributed to the catalytic decomposition of H2O2 to generate highly reactive radicals and abundant oxygen.

Flocculation with heterogeneous composition in water environments: A review

Que Nguyen Ho et al.

Summary: Flocculation is a critical process for controlling the fate and transport of suspended particulate matter (SPM) in water environments. However, the lack of comprehensive research on the composition and structure of flocs has led to misconceptions about the dynamics of SPM. This review summarizes the current understanding of the heterogeneous composition of flocs and discusses the effects of human activities on floc composition.

Influence of DOM characteristics on the flocculation removal of trace pharmaceuticals in surface water by the successive dosing of alum and moderately hydrophobic chitosan

Zhangzheng Wang et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the flocculation performance of sequentially dosing alum and hydrophobically modified chitosan (alum+HC) for pharmaceutical removal in different water sources. The characteristics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) were found to influence the efficacy of HC in removing pharmaceutical compounds. The study demonstrated the enhanced performance of alum+HC in removing pharmaceuticals and highlighted the importance of hydrophobicity and functional group composition of DOM in pharmaceutical removal.

A solar photo-thermochemical hybrid system using peroxydisulfate for organic matters removal and improving ultrafiltration membrane performance in surface water treatment

Yuanqing Guo et al.

Summary: The use of solar-activated PDS pretreatment efficiently degrades organic pollutants and reduces fouling in UF membranes, especially when dealing with Songhua River water. Both solar light and heating effects contribute to PDS degradation of natural organic matters, with correlations found between UV254, DOC, and membrane fouling indexes.

Cost of fouling in full-scale reverse osmosis and nanofiltration installations in the Netherlands

M. Jafari et al.

Summary: The economic impact of fouling in spiral wound membranes was investigated by conducting an economic analysis on seven full-scale installations. It was found that fouling cost in RO plants accounted for 24% of operational expenses, while it was only 11% in NF plants due to low biofouling potential of feed water. The major cost factors in fouling were identified as early membrane replacement cost, additional energy cost, and in some cases, downt-time cost during cleaning events.

Effect of ferrate pre-oxidation on algae-laden water ultrafiltration: Attenuating membrane fouling and decreasing formation potential of disinfection byproducts

Hai-Yang He et al.

Summary: Ferrate pre-oxidation was found to be effective in enhancing the FeCl3/ultrafiltration treatment of algae-laden source water, leading to disruption of algae cells, formation of algae-ferric floc, and degradation of algal extracellular organic matter. This treatment also improved membrane flux, reduced membrane resistance, and removed a significant amount of dissolved organic compounds and total nitrogen compared to conventional FeCl3/ultrafiltration treatment.

The suitability of titanium salts in coagulation removal of micropollutants and in alleviation of membrane fouling

Yonghai Gan et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the performances of three types of titanium coagulants in water treatment and found that titanium xerogel (TXC) showed better results in reducing membrane fouling. TXC demonstrated promising potential as a coagulant due to its superior floc properties, weaker pH-dependence, and higher resistance to coordination with organic pollutants. The observation sheds new lights on the fabrication and application of coagulants in various scenarios.

Zhaoyang Su et al.

Summary: Membrane fouling in nanofiltration systems can be mitigated by the accumulation of biopolymers, which form a protective layer on the membrane surface and separate medium-low molecular weight materials through adsorption and size exclusion. This approach shows promise for long-term operation of NF membrane systems by improving fouling mitigation, especially in the autumn season.
