Bioactive polysaccharides from red seaweed as potent food supplements: a systematic review of their extraction, purification, and biological activities

Si-Min Qiu et al.

Summary: Most marine macroalgae have bioactive compounds, red seaweeds in particular are rich sources of bioactive polysaccharides with various physiological and biological activities. However, the lack of comprehensive information and human clinical trials on red seaweed polysaccharides limits their industrial-scale utilization in functional foods. This review summarizes recent information on the extraction, purification, biological activities, and molecular principles of red seaweed polysaccharides, providing a basis for further research on their structure, mechanisms, and applications in functional foods.

Determination of polysaccharides composition in Polygonatum sibiricum and Polygonatum odoratum by HPLC-FLD with pre-column derivatization

Sheng Xu et al.

Summary: A high-performance liquid chromatography-fluorescence detection (HPLC-FLD) method was established for the determination of seven monosaccharides in Polygonatum sibiricum and Polygonatum odoratum. The method showed high sensitivity, strong specificity, good linear relationship and recovery efficiency, providing a feasible analytical tool for the study of polysaccharides. The findings on polysaccharides from Polygonatum sibiricum and Polygonatum odoratum can guide the natural medicine industry.

Alginate-like exopolysaccharides in aerobic granular sludge: A review

Sasmitha Aulia Zahra et al.

Summary: The challenges of granular instability and a long granulation start-up period in aerobic granular sludge systems can be overcome by identifying the components and interactions of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). Alginate-like exopolysaccharides (ALE), as a model component of EPS, have been intensively studied for their extraction feasibility and potential resource recovery. However, the characterization of ALE and its role in EPS are still overlooked.

Algae biochar enhanced methanogenesis by enriching specific methanogens at low inoculation ratio during sludge anaerobic digestion

Qian Jiang et al.

Summary: The study found that adding Taihu blue algae biochar (ABC) at different inoculation ratios can enhance methane production, with more favorable enrichment of Methanosarcina at lower inoculation ratios. Mechanism analysis showed that the improvements in methane production at lower inoculation ratios were not due to initial organic loading rate increments.

Pectic polysaccharides from edible halophytes: Insight on extraction processes, structural characterizations and immunomodulatory potentials

Zeineb Mzoughi et al.

Summary: Polysaccharides derived from halophytes have attracted increasing interest due to their biological activities, particularly their immunomodulatory effects. These polysaccharides, mainly composed of pectic polysaccharides, show potential in discovering novel therapeutic agents with beneficial properties. Structural characteristics, such as uronic acids, molecular weights, sulfate presence, and unmethylated acidic groups, play significant roles in the biological activities of these carbohydrates.

Dynamic changes of structural characteristics of snow chrysanthemum polysaccharides during in vitro digestion and fecal fermentation and related impacts on gut microbiota

Ding-Tao Wu et al.

Summary: Snow chrysanthemum polysaccharides (JHP) can be partially degraded during gastrointestinal digestion and further utilized by gut microbiota in fecal fermentation, leading to an increase in beneficial bacteria. This suggests that JHP has the potential to serve as a prebiotic, influencing the composition and abundance of gut microbiota.

Effect of in vitro simulated gastrointestinal digestion on structural characteristics and anti-proliferative activities of the polysaccharides from the shells of Juglans regia L

Zhen Luo et al.

Summary: The polysaccharides from the shells of Juglans regia L. underwent significant changes in physicochemical properties during simulated gastrointestinal digestion, which led to increased anti-proliferative effects on HeLa cells. The digested polysaccharides exhibited stronger inhibition on cell viabilities through induction of apoptosis, excessive ROS accumulation, and cell cycle arrest at G2/M phase compared to undigested polysaccharides, suggesting their potential for anti-proliferative applications.

Anaerobic co-digestion of alkaline pre-treated grease trap waste: Laboratory-scale research to full-scale implementation

M. S. Romero-Guiza et al.

Summary: The study shows that alkaline pre-treatment of grease trap waste can improve the bioavailability of organic matter and facilitate its use as a co-substrate. Full-scale anaerobic co-digestion assays of pre-treated grease trap waste and sewage sludge did not show inhibitory or operational problems under experimental conditions. An economic assessment for a 160,000 population equivalent WWTP in a European scenario showed a relatively short payback period.

Digestion liquid based alkaline pretreatment of waste activated sludge promotes methane production from anaerobic digestion

Dandan He et al.

Summary: By refluxing digestion liquid into waste activated sludge pre-treatment unit, a significant increase in methane production from anaerobic digestion of waste water can be achieved. Biodegradable organics in the digestion liquid do not affect the anaerobic digestion process, but can enhance methane production through reutilization.
