Mixotrophic denitrification improvement in ecologicalfloating bed:Interaction between iron scraps and plant biomass br

Yuanyuan Peng et al.

Summary: In this study, an iron scrap-based ecological floating bed (FeB-EFB) coupled with plant biomass was constructed for treating low-polluted water, and the nitrogen removal performance and mechanism were investigated. The results showed that FeB-EFB effectively removed nitrogen, with a nitrate removal efficiency of 29.14 +/- 8.06% even at a low temperature. The presence of plant biomass promoted the release efficiency of iron scraps, while iron scraps facilitated the availability of plant biomass by promoting cellulose decomposition. The improvement of mixotrophic denitrification played a significant role in enhancing nitrogen removal in FeB-EFB. These findings suggest that coupling iron scraps with plant biomass can be an effective approach to improve the nitrogen removal performance of ecological floating beds.

A novel mechanism study of microplastic and As co-contamination on indica rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Youming Dong et al.

Summary: This study explored the effects and mechanisms of PSMP and PTFE microplastics on As bioavailability in paddy soil. PSMP and PTFE inhibited root activity and reduced the abundance of certain bacteria, leading to decreased iron plaques on root surfaces and inhibited As uptake by rice. Additionally, PSMP and PTFE decreased hemoglobin content and inhibited the activities of starch synthase and pyrophosphorylase in rice grains, resulting in reduced starch accumulation and biomass. Ultimately, the physiological toxicity and adverse effects of PSMP, PTFE, and As led to decreased rice yield in co-contaminated soil.

Visualization and quantification of carbon rusty sink by rice root iron plaque: Mechanisms, functions, and global implications

Liang Wei et al.

Summary: Paddies have higher organic carbon stocks than upland soils, and iron plaque on rice roots is a mechanism that traps carbon. This study quantified the contribution of iron plaque to organic matter stabilization in the rice rhizosphere and estimated its role in global carbon sequestration in paddy soils. The results showed that iron plaque formation increased the amount of carbon trapped, and this mechanism could potentially capture a significant amount of carbon globally each rice season.

Effects of exogenous organic acids and flooding on root exudates, rhizosphere bacterial community structure, and iron plaque formation in Kandelia obovata seedlings

Huijie Meng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the coupling mechanism between organic acids (OAs) exuded by plant roots and iron (Fe) redox cycling bacteria in the rhizosphere of coastal wetland plants. The results showed that exogenous OAs and long-term flooding increased the organic matter content in root exudates and enhanced bacterial diversity in the rhizosphere. However, they also decreased the Fe plaque content in plant roots and changed the relative abundance of Fe-oxidizing bacteria.

Root exudates drive soil-microbe-nutrient feedbacks in response to plant growth

Mengli Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of root exudates from different growth stages of Arabidopsis thaliana plants on soil bacterial communities, soil nutrients, and plant growth. The results showed that fast-growing stage root exudates had a significant impact on soil bacterial community structure, induced higher nutrient mineralization, and enhanced plant growth. Plants may adjust their exudation patterns during different growth phases to meet increased nutrient demands for faster growth.

Nano-Fe3O4-modified biochar promotes the formation of iron plaque and cadmium immobilization in rice root

Jing-Yi Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different exogenous iron materials on iron plaque formation on rice roots and its impact on the absorption, migration, and transportation of Cd and Fe in rice plants. The results showed that applying nano-Fe3O4-modified biochar (BC-Fe) promoted the formation of iron plaque and reduced the translocation and accumulation of Cd in aerial rice tissues. Different iron materials had varying effects on iron plaque formation, with BC-Fe showing a higher proportion of crystallized iron plaque and significantly reducing the translocation factor of Cd.

Sulphur nutrition and iron plaque formation on roots of rice seedlings and their consequences for immobilisation and uptake of chromium in solution culture

Peiman Zandi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of sulfur on the chromium tolerance of rice plants and found that a moderate sulfur treatment can effectively reduce the bioavailability of chromium in rice shoots. The barrier capacity of iron plaque to chromium absorption in rice plants was found to be primarily influenced by the applied chromium concentration and the competition between chromium and sulfur at the absorbing sites.

Root iron plaque abundance as an indicator of carbon decomposition rates in a tidal freshwater wetland in response to salinity and flooding

Yuxiu Liu et al.

Summary: The study suggests a correlation between root ferric iron (Fe(III)) plaque abundance and potential C mineralization rates (CMRs) in response to salinity treatments. Microbial Fe(III) reduction predominates in the oligohaline treatment, but decreases in the mesohaline treatment due to salinity inhibition. Overall, root Fe(III) plaque abundance could be an indicator of carbon decomposition rates in tidal freshwater wetland soils.

Biogeochemical cycling of iron (hydr-)oxides and its impact on organic carbon turnover in coastal wetlands: A global synthesis and perspective

Changxun Yu et al.

Summary: Coastal wetlands are important reservoirs of organic carbon and various iron (hydr-)oxides, which are closely linked to the turnover of organic carbon in these ecosystems. The distribution of Fe (hydr-)oxides in coastal wetland soils is influenced by regional hydro-geochemical processes and anthropogenic activities, while the activities of plant roots and macro-organisms play a critical role in the formation and turnover of Fe (hydr-)oxides. The interaction between Fe plaques dominated by amorphous Fe hydroxides and wetland plant roots contributes to maintaining plant productivity in coastal wetlands under different environmental stresses.

Effect of iron plaque on antibiotic uptake and metabolism in water spinach (Ipomoea aquatic Forsk.) grown in hydroponic culture

Jun Tang et al.

Summary: Iron plaque (IP) in water spinach was found to have an impact on the uptake and translocation of tetracyclines (TCs), with the amount of IP positively correlating with the bioconcentration factor of TCs in roots and the accumulation of TC metabolites. The concentration of TCs in aerial tissues was significantly lower than in roots, showing a negative correlation with the translocation factor of TCs. The study suggests that metabolism of TCs in aquatic plants should not be overlooked when assessing the risk of antibiotic pollution.
