The anammox coupled partial-denitrification process in an integrated granular sludge and fixed-biofilm reactor developed for mainstream wastewater treatment: Performance and community structure

Jin-Long Zhuang et al.

Summary: This study introduces an innovative reactor called iGB-A/PD, which combines granular sludge and fixed-biofilm to remove nitrogen from municipal wastewater. Compared to other A/PD systems, this reactor has higher effluent quality and nitrogen removal rate. Gene expression analysis confirms the important role of anammox bacteria in nitrogen removal and reveals high expression of other genes related to nitrogen conversion. Kinetic assays and mass flux determination show the activity and importance of different regions of the reactor in nitrogen conversion. Metagenomic analysis identifies the dominant species involved in the process.

High concentrations of dissolved organic nitrogen and N-nitrosodimethylamine precursors in effluent from biological nutrient removal process with low dissolved oxygen conditions

Kewei Liao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of low dissolved oxygen (DO) levels on dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) and N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) precursor concentrations in biological nutrient removal (BNR) effluents. Surprisingly, lower DO levels were found to result in significantly higher levels of effluent DON and NDMA precursors. Ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry analysis revealed that molecules produced by microbes at low-DO levels may play critical roles in NDMA formation. Path analysis suggested that NDMA formation potential had strong associations with microbe-DON network stability.

Impact of nitrite and oxygen on nitrous oxide emissions from a granular sludge sequencing batch reactor

Shannon K. Cavanaugh et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of dissolved oxygen and nitrite concentrations on nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions in wastewater treatment and provides strategies for meeting potential gaseous emission permits. The results show that higher dissolved oxygen and nitrite concentrations are associated with higher N2O emissions, and the lowest emissions are observed at a dissolved oxygen concentration of 1 mg L-1.

Summary: The anammox technology is highly regarded for its low sludge production and energy efficiency, but faces challenges in dealing with inhibiting factors in waste streams. Detailed control and mitigation of these factors are crucial for successful implementation of the technology. Developing and implementing control strategies are key to addressing inhibiting factors and ensuring optimal performance.

New insights into co-treatment of mature landfill leachate with municipal sewage via integrated partial nitrification, Anammox and denitratation

Fangzhai Zhang et al.

Summary: The study applied Partial Nitrification-Anammox/denitratation (PNAD) process to co-treat mature landfill leachate with municipal sewage for 300 days, achieving satisfactory effluent quality with Anammox and denitrification contributing to main nitrogen removal efficiency. The study also confirmed that nitrate generated during the process could be reduced to nitrite and reused, highlighting the potential for sustainable nitrogen removal.

Pairing denitrifying phosphorus accumulating organisms with anaerobic ammonium oxidizing bacteria for simultaneous N and P removal

Jun Yin et al.

Summary: Coupling denitrifying polyphosphate accumulating organisms (DPAO) with anaerobic ammonium oxidizing (Anammox) bacteria in a single treatment scheme has challenges due to their competition for nitrite and different growth rates. This study aimed to uncouple their solid retention time (SRT) by growing them in different sludge fractions and found that Anammox bacteria had higher nitrite affinity in biofilms, while DPAO were more sensitive to nitrite and better suited for growth in the protective biofilm.

A twilight for the complete nitrogen removal via synergistic partial-denitrification, anammox, and DNRA process

Hafiz Adeel Ahmad et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that the application of nano-zerovalent iron and low strength magnetic field reduced the start-up time and improved the long-term stability of anammox. The reactor with only magnetic field showed shorter start-up time and increased nitrogen removal efficiency, while the reactor with the coupled treatment of nano-zerovalent iron and magnetic field exhibited higher stability and efficiency. Additionally, the presence of other nitrogenous genera in the reactors contributed to the synergistic relationship with anammox, leading to higher nitrogen removal efficiency in the reactor with the coupled treatment.

Recent developments of the mainstream anammox processes: Challenges and opportunities

Hoang Phuc Trinh et al.

Summary: Mainstream anammox processes face challenges such as difficulty in out-selection of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria, high organic carbon to nitrogen ratio, retention of anammox bacteria, and influence of high concentrations of ammonia and nitrite compounds. Efficient strategies are necessary to manage high carbon to nitrogen ratios, improve performance in low-intensity wastewater, and retain anammox bacteria for widespread application in full-scale WWTPs. Key elements in the design, operation, and maintenance of mainstream anammox processes in full-scale WWTPs are also suggested.
