Occurrence, spatial distribution, and sources of PFASs in the water and sediment from lakes in the Tibetan Plateau

Yu Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the occurrence, distribution, partitioning behavior, and sources of PFASs in the four lakes of the Tibetan Plateau. The results show that Qinghai Lake has the highest PFAS concentrations, while Ranwu Lake has the lowest. Functional groups and CF2 moiety units play an important role in the partitioning behavior. The main sources of PFASs in the southern lakes are South Asia via long-range atmospheric transport, while in the northern Qinghai Lake, long-range atmospheric transport, local emissions, and tourism activities are the primary sources.

Understanding the transformations of nanoplastic onto phospholipid bilayers: Mechanism, microscopic interaction and cytotoxicity assessment

Shideng Yuan et al.

Summary: Nanoplastics are now recognized as emerging pollutants in the environment. The bioaccumulation and cytotoxicity of five nanoplastics were investigated on DPPC bilayers using molecular dynamics. The results revealed the compactness of nanoplastics in the human body and the dominance of van der Waals interactions in their interaction with lipid bilayers. The study also highlighted the ability of nanoplastics to decrease lipid bilayer thickness as a measure of their cytotoxicity. Overall, this work contributes to the understanding of the molecular-level bioaccumulation and toxicity of nanoplastics.

Spatial distribution, compositional profile, sources, ecological and human health risks of legacy and emerging per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in freshwater reservoirs of Punjab, Pakistan

Rahat Riaz et al.

Summary: This study reports the occurrence and impacts of PFASs in freshwater reservoirs in Pakistan. The detection frequencies of PFASs were found to range from 37% to 100%. The highest concentration of PFASs was detected in one of the reservoirs, exceeding the EU guideline value. Ecological risk assessment showed that certain PFASs posed moderate to high risks to aquatic organisms. Source apportionment analysis revealed that industrial effluent is the main source of PFASs in the reservoirs.

Removing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in water by foam fractionation

Yifei Wang et al.

Summary: Foam fractionation (FF) is an effective method for removing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from water, resulting in highly concentrated PFAS solutions. The study found that increasing air flow, ionic strength, and adding a thickener enhanced PFAS enrichment in the foam. FF treatment achieved a removal rate above 70% for most monitored PFASs in landfill leachate, groundwater contaminated by aqueous film-forming foams, and wastewater treatment plant effluents. The concentration of PFASs in the collected foam was over 30 times higher than in the original samples.

Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) adsorbed on microplastics in drinking water: Implications for female exposure, reproductive health risk and its mitigation strategies through in silico methods

Meijin Du et al.

Summary: Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were used to analyze the effects of different additive combinations in microplastics (MPs) on the female reproductive toxicity of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). It was found that 59.38% of plastic additive combinations had synergistic toxicity effects and a plastic additive combination scheme with a 31.10% decrease of joint toxic action was selected. The study also investigated the adsorption of PFAS by MPs and found that hydrophobic PFAS was more easily adsorbed. The influence of hydrophobic natural organic matter (NOM) on the adsorption of PFAS and MPs by activated carbon (AC) was also explored. Machine learning methods were used to understand the molecular parameters that can improve PFAS function and reduce female reproductive toxicity. The study aims to mitigate the toxic hazards of PFAS exposure through drinking water and provide guidance for designing PFAS alternatives with low female reproductive toxicity.

Theoretical insights into the uptake of sulfonamides onto phospholipid bilayers: Mechanisms, interaction and toxicity evaluation

Shideng Yuan et al.

Summary: In this study, the bioaccumulation mechanism of sulfonamides (SAs) onto lipid bilayers and their effects on lipid bilayer properties were investigated using molecular dynamics simulations. The results showed that SAs have a favorable thermodynamic partitioning into the lipid bilayers, and their accommodation onto the membrane involves multiple stages. Furthermore, different SAs exhibited different preferences for the interface region and lipid phase, and they also affected the electrostatic potential and thickness of the membrane to varying degrees. This molecular-level study provides valuable insights into the toxicity and bioaccumulation of SAs.
