Fast start-up and reactivation of anammox process using polyurethane sponge

Zhenghua Peng et al.

Summary: Anammox is an efficient nitrogen removal technique, but its long start-up time limits industrial application, therefore the use of carriers to accelerate start-ups is essential. Preservation of anammox bacteria is crucial, and adding polyurethane sponge can shorten the start-up and reactivation time by retaining more anammox bacteria in the reactor.

Inhibition of ferrous iron (Fe2+) to sulfur-driven autotrophic denitrification: Insight into microbial community and functional genes

Yunmeng Pang et al.

Summary: The presence of Fe2+ significantly affects the performance of sulfur-driven autotrophic denitrification, with higher concentrations leading to inhibition of denitrification and accumulation of nitrite and nitrous oxide. The abundance of Thiobacillus is positively correlated with nitrate removal rate, but negatively correlated with Fe2+ concentration. Fe2+ also influences the abundance of bacterial 16S rRNA, denitrifying genes, and sulfur-oxidizing genes, particularly nosZ and soxB, which have the most sensitivity to Fe2+.

Syntrophic interspecies electron transfer drives carbon fixation and growth by Rhodopseudomonas palustris under dark, anoxic conditions

Xing Liu et al.

Summary: This study introduces electroautotrophy, a previously unknown dark CO2 fixation mode facilitated by the electrosyntrophic interaction between Geobacter metallireducens and Rhodopseudomonas palustris. Through transcriptomic analysis, it was found that electrons are transferred from G. metallireducens to R. palustris to support dark CO2 fixation. This process provides a metabolic window for the survival of anaerobic phototrophs in anoxic and dark sedimentary environments, potentially impacting the global carbon cycle.
