Adsorptive Potential of Orange Peel Biochar for Removal of Basic Red 46 Dye and Phytotoxicity Analysis

Riti Thapar Kapoor et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the sorption ability of orange peel biochar (OPB) for removing Basic Red 46 (BR46) dye. Various factors such as pH, time, initial dye concentration, dosage, temperature, and particle size were investigated for their effects on BR46 removal from aqueous solution. OPB demonstrated a high removal efficiency of 94% at pH 9 and an initial dye concentration of 100 mg L-1. The Langmuir model well described the equilibrium data, and OPB exhibited a maximum sorption capacity of 7.36 mg g(-1). Adsorption kinetics and thermodynamics indicated a pseudo-second-order mechanism, chemisorption, and an exothermic process. Phytotoxicity studies confirmed that the OPB-treated effluent could be utilized for irrigation. Therefore, OPB shows great potential as an adsorbent for BR46 removal.

Magnetic-watermelon rinds biochar for uranium-contaminated water treatment using an electromagnetic semi-batch column with removal mechanistic investigations

Lakshmi Prasanna Lingamdinne et al.

Summary: Utilizing magnetized biochar derived from waste watermelon rind for the removal of uranium contaminants in water has shown enhanced adsorption capacity, stability, and reusability. The surface characteristics of magnetized watermelon rind biochar (MWBC) outperformed other sourced biochars, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 323.56 mg/g at pH 4.0 and 293 K. The presence of Fe oxide in MWBC significantly increased ion exchange and complexation action capacity, making it an effective and cost-efficient solution for U(VI) removal from aqueous solutions.

Adsorption of phenol on kenaf-derived biochar: studies on physicochemical and adsorption characteristics and mechanism

Eun-Ji Cho et al.

Summary: Biochar derived from kenaf was used as an adsorbent to remove phenol from aqueous solutions in this study. The highest phenol adsorption was achieved at 750 degrees C, and phenol molecules were adsorbed on the surface of kenaf-derived biochar through hydrophobic attraction and pi-pi interaction. The results suggest that kenaf-derived biochar could be an effective and low-cost adsorbent for phenol removal.

Effect of different thermal activation on hydroxyapatite to eliminate mercury from aqueous solutions in continuous adsorption system

Mehdi Bahrami et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of modified hydroxyapatite by thermal activation in removing mercury from aqueous solution. Heat-treated bones showed superior adsorption capability, especially bone heated at 500 degrees C. Effective parameters for mercury elimination were identified, with optimal sorption occurring at pH 7, an initial mercury concentration of 80 mg/L, a bed height of 6 cm, and a flow rate of 0.5 mL/min. Various models were used to describe the packed-bed adsorption, highlighting the remarkable capability of modified bones to remove mercury ions in a dynamic system.
