Role of sunlight and oxygen on the performance of photo-Fenton process at near neutral pH using organic fertilizers as iron chelates

Nuria Lopez-Vinent et al.

Summary: This study investigated the role of sunlight and oxygen in the photo-Fenton process at near neutral pH using five organic fertilizers as iron complexes. The results showed that different iron chelates have different UV absorbance and stability constants, which affect the reaction mechanisms in SMX degradation. The proposed complementary reaction mechanisms involve potential photoexcitation of the iron complex and subsequent oxygen-mediated hydroxyl radical generation reactions.

Photo-persulfate oxidation and mineralization of benzoic acid: Kinetics and optimization under UVC irradiation

Valencia Elvira Sugihartono et al.

Summary: Persulfate (PS, S2O82-) under UV irradiation was used to effectively treat synthetic wastewater containing benzoic acid (BA). The degradation and removal of BA reached up to 100% and 96% respectively, with optimal conditions including UVA and UVC light irradiation, pH 3.0, and a dose ratio ([PS](0)/[BA](0)) close to stoichiometry. The study revealed that HO center dot contributed to the mineralization rate, while SO4 center dot- played a significant role in the degradation rate. A consecutive kinetic model was proposed to explain the reaction sequence and rate-determining factors in the photo-persulfate oxidation of benzoic acid.

Pharmaceutical pollution of hospital effluents and municipal wastewaters of Eastern Canada

Marc-Antoine Vaudreuil et al.

Summary: A method for quantification of multi-class pharmaceuticals in wastewaters from hospitals was developed and validated in this study. The results showed high concentrations of pharmaceuticals in hospital wastewaters and their better affinity to suspended solids. These findings provide arguments for at source treatment of these specific effluents before their introduction into urban wastewater systems.

Degradation pathways and kinetics of chloroacetonitriles by UV/persulfate in the presence of bromide

Miao Li et al.

Summary: Chloroacetonitriles (CANs) are toxic disinfection by-products frequently found in water supply systems. UV/persulfate (PS) is an effective method to degrade CANs. The presence of bromide (Br-) affects the degradation of CANs by UV/PS. Higher concentrations of Br- inhibit the degradation of CANs to a greater extent.

Degradation of tetracycline by UV/Fe3+/persulfate process: Kinetics, mechanism, DBPs yield, toxicity evaluation and bacterial community analysis

Hanxuan Zeng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the degradation of tetracycline (TC) using UV/Fe3+/persulfate (PS) coupled process. The primary reactive oxygen species (ROS) identified in this process were hydroxyl radicals, sulfate radicals, and superoxide radicals. The degradation of TC was found to be pH-dependent, with the optimal performance obtained at pH 3.0. The presence of humic acid, bicarbonate, nitrate, and carbonate inhibited the degradation of TC. The microbial community composition analysis showed a significant decline in the relative abundance of ARG-carrying opportunistic pathogens after UV/Fe3+/PS treatment.

Feasibility of UVC laser-activated persulfate with concentrated beam for micropollutant degradation in water

Xing-Xing Wang et al.

Summary: A novel UVC laser source was used to activate persulfate for degrading BPA in this study. The concentrated beam emitted by this new light source showed higher BPA removal efficiency compared to the diffused beam. The study also identified the factors that affect BPA degradation efficiency, such as the h/D ratio of the reactor vessel and the presence of water matrix.

Novel FeII/EDDS/UV/PAA advanced oxidation process: Mechanisms and applications for naproxen degradation at neutral pH and low FeII dosage

Han Chen et al.

Summary: The study investigated the application of the integrated FEUP process for the degradation of naproxen (NAP) at neutral pH, with a four-phase conceptual process of degradation established. Superior degradation performance was achieved under low FeII dosage and neutral conditions. The effect of water matrices on NAP degradation was also evaluated, showing an inhibiting effect of Br-, HCO3-/CO32-, and humic acid (HA) while Cl- showed no influence in the FEUP process.

Occurrence of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in bottled water and assessment of the associated risks

Chengfei Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence of 187 pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in bottled water samples, with 44 compounds belonging to 14 PPCP categories detected. The thermal stabilities of the PPCPs were determined, revealing that only 35 out of the 187 compounds were degraded significantly after boiling for 5 minutes. Despite low risk levels overall, certain PPCPs showed higher risk levels in infants compared to other life stages, highlighting the need for further research on the toxicity of PPCP mixtures and their effects on human intestinal microbiota.

Solar photo-Fenton oxidation of cytostatic drugs via Fe(III)-EDDS at circumneutral pH in an aqueous environment

Hank Hui-Hsiang Lin et al.

Summary: Cytostatic drugs are commonly found in wastewater effluents due to their poor biodegradability, but the Fe(III)-EDDS complex has shown to efficiently degrade cyclophosphamide and 5-fluorouracil under solar light. The addition of EDDS widens the operational pH range of the solar photo-Fenton process, and a suitable Fe(III):EDDS ratio and initial dissolved oxygen level impact the degradation performance. Rapid degradation of the drugs was achieved within 1.5 minutes in the solar photo-Fenton process, with potential for total mineralization under relatively low Fe(III) concentration and H2O2 dosage.
