The Adsorption of Corn Stalk Biochar for Pb and Cd: Preparation, Characterization, and Batch Adsorption Study

Shiwei Yan et al.

Summary: In this study, the characteristics of corn stalk biochar and its adsorption mechanisms for two heavy metals, Pb and Cd, were investigated. The results showed that the corn stalk biochar exhibited a porous structure and contained functional groups such as phenol and carboxyl groups, which played important roles in adsorption. The adsorption capacity was influenced by factors such as pH, temperature, and ionic strength. The kinetic experiments indicated that the adsorption processes could be described by the pseudo-first order model, and the adsorption isotherm could be fitted well by the Langmuir model. Overall, this study provides insights into the potential application of corn stalk biochar for metal pollution treatment in wastewater.

Oxidation reaction behavior of Cr-hosting spinels during heating of solid wastes containing Cr

Xiao Liu et al.

Summary: This study examined the reaction behaviors of Cr-hosting spinels at high temperature and provided new insights for treating solid wastes containing Cr, including possible oxidation mechanisms and oxidation-reduction processes. The study showed that CaO can trigger the oxidation of Cr(III) in Cr-hosting spinels and identified the key steps for the oxidation process. Additionally, the study demonstrated that CaO can also trigger the reduction of CaCrO4 into a new Cr(V) compound, and highlighted the temperature-dependent reactions of CuO with CaCrO4 to form CuCrO2.

Potential of Biochar Derived from Agricultural Residues for Sustainable Management

Sasiwimol Khawkomol et al.

Summary: This study produced biochar from agricultural residues (such as corncob, coconut husk, coconut shell, and rice straw) using a horizontal drum kiln. The biochars had low O/C and H/C ratios, negative charge from functional groups, and desirable properties such as high heating value and surface functional groups suitable for various applications including biofuels, adsorbents, and soil amendments. Coconut husk and shell biochars, in particular, were identified as having ideal properties for these purposes.
