A review of microbial degradation of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS): Biotransformation routes and enzymes

Ashenafi Berhanu et al.

Summary: Since the 1950s, large amounts of PFAS have been dumped into the environment, causing significant contamination. PFAS are resistant to degradation and have adverse effects on health and the environment. Traditional physicochemical methods for PFAS treatment have drawbacks, making microbial degradation and enzymatic treatment highly sought after. This review provides an overview of PFAS classification, properties, and interaction with the environment, and discusses recent developments in microbial degradation, transformation routes, and challenges in bioremediation approaches.

Underestimation of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances in Biosolids: Precursor Transformation During Conventional Treatment

Jake T. Thompson et al.

Summary: Wastewater treatment plants generate biosolids, which are commonly beneficially reused as an agricultural amendment. However, pathogen reduction is required due to the risk of exposure. This study aimed to quantify 92 per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in biosolids and examine their transformation during treatment processes. Results showed that PFAS concentrations were dominated by PFAA precursor species, particularly diPAPs, and treatment options such as heat treatment and composting changed the ratio of PFAA precursors to PFAAs.

Effect of Loading Frequency on Ammonia-Nitrogen Removal Kinetics in Early-Stage Pilot-Scale Vertical Flow Constructed Wetlands Treating Landfill Leachate

Dreyton J. Lott et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of loading frequency and plant species on NH3-N removal in a VFCW. Eight pilot-scale columns were constructed and planted with Typha latifolia or Scirpus californicus. Results showed that NH3-N removal efficiency ranged from 39.4% to 55.1%, with the best performance observed in columns planted with Typha latifolia and fed over 24 hours. Further research is needed to understand the underlying mechanisms.

LC-HRMS screening of per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) in impregnated paper samples and contaminated soils

Boris Bugsel et al.

Summary: High concentrations of PFAS have been detected in agricultural soils in Southwest Germany, believed to be caused by discharges of contaminated paper sludge and compost. PFCAs have also been found in groundwater, drinking water, and plants in the area. New compounds have been identified through HRMS, with diPAPs and diSAmPAP being major contaminants.

Application of native plants in constructed floating wetlands as a passive remediation approach for PFAS-impacted surface water

John Awad et al.

Summary: Strategies for remediating per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) often focus on highly contaminated areas, but PFAS mobility leads to widespread low-level contamination. Constructed Floating Wetlands (CFWs) promote plant growth in buoyant structures, assimilating pollutants. This study found that CFWs could potentially reduce PFAS contaminants in surface waters.

Summary: Per-and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have historically been used in fire-suppression activities, but due to their persistence, bioaccumulation, and toxicity, investigations into alternative PFAS-free AFFF formulations have been conducted. This study aimed to characterize the constituents and assess the biodegradability of PFAS-free AFFF, providing valuable information for the development of more biodegradable alternatives.

Distribution, behaviour, bioavailability and remediation of poly- and per-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in solid biowastes and biowaste-treated soil

Nanthi Bolan et al.

Summary: Aqueous film-forming foam and biowastes are major sources of PFAS in soil, with plant uptake of PFAS through soil application of biowastes being a pathway for animal and human exposure. Remediation of PFAS in biowastes and soils treated with these biowastes can be achieved through various methods including prevention through source control, soil washing, phytoremediation, immobilization, and destruction. This review presents the distribution, bioavailability, and remediation of PFAS in soil receiving solid biowastes such as biosolids, composts, and manure.

A review of the occurrence, transformation, and removal of poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in wastewater treatment plants

Swadhina Priyadarshini Lenka et al.

Summary: PFAS are widely used in consumer and industrial applications worldwide, with monitoring studies in WWTPs mainly focused on China, Europe, and North America. Short and long-chain perfluoroalkyl acids are widely detected in WWTP influents and effluents, with most WWTPs exhibiting low removal efficiencies for PFAS and biodegradation being the primary mechanism for PFAS transformation in WWTPs.

From Waste Collection Vehicles to Landfills: Indication of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substance (PFAS) Transformation

Yalan Liu et al.

Summary: Municipal solid waste contains significant amounts of PFAS, which may transform during landfilling. Landfill leachate was found to be dominated by PFAAs, while commercial and residential vehicle leachate contained mostly PFAA-precursors, indicating precursor transformation during landfill disposal. Additional PFAS not routinely monitored were detected, with proposed degradation pathways involving diPAPs and FTS transformation into PFCAs via FTCAs.
