Bacillus thuringiensis Production Through Solid-State Fermentation Using Organic Fraction of Municipal Solid Waste (OFMSW) Enzymatic Hydrolysate

Esther Molina-Penate et al.

Summary: This paper explores an alternative method for utilizing the organic fraction of waste by enzymatic hydrolysis to obtain sugar-rich fraction for liquid fermentation and partially hydrolyzed solid for solid-state fermentation. The pH of the solid substrate was modified using alkaline cosubstrates, and the growth and sporulation of Bacillus thuringiensis were achieved. This valorization pathway aligns with the concept of urban biorefineries.

Organic municipal waste as feedstock for biorefineries: bioconversion technologies integration and challenges

Esther Molina-Penate et al.

Summary: This review discusses the potential of using the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) as a feedstock for biorefineries. Enzymatic hydrolysis is identified as a key process for unlocking the capabilities of OFMSW by separating structural components into functionalized molecules. Various utilization scenarios for these molecules are presented, along with suitable configurations for process integration. Challenges for implementing OFMSW biorefineries are also identified.

Performance evaluation and microbial community analysis of mesophilic and thermophilic sludge fermentation processes coupled with thermal hydrolysis

E. Hosseini Koupaie et al.

Summary: The research found that coupling thermal hydrolysis (TH) and acidogenic fermentation can effectively increase the production of soluble organics in sludge, but it may reduce overall microbial diversity. Pre-hydrolysis achieved higher solubilization and VFAs production, and stimulated the growth of more kinetically efficient fermentative bacteria.

Advances towards the understanding of microbial communities in dark fermentation of enzymatic hydrolysates: Diversity, structure and hydrogen production performance

Rodolfo Palomo-Briones et al.

Summary: Microbial communities involved in hydrogen production from enzymatic hydrolysates of agave bagasse were analyzed through 16S rRNA sequencing. The study found that different enzymatic hydrolysates and reactor configurations can influence microbial community diversity and H-2 production rates. Contrary to prevailing theory, a stable environment in continuous stirred-tank reactors favored high-performance H-2 production, with microbial diversity showing an inverse relationship with H-2 production rates.
