Research on dynamic microwave low-temperature carbonization of high performance carbon fiber

Guozhen Zhao et al.

Summary: In this study, the polyacrylonitrile precursor was obtained by one-step polymerization and spinning, and carbonization was conducted using microwave and conventional heating in nitrogen. Real-time measurement of the fiber surface temperature showed that the dielectric loss tangent first increased and then decreased with temperature. Compared to conventional carbonization, microwave carbonization achieved excellent carbon fiber tensile strength and initial modulus at a lower temperature.

Recycling and recovery infrastructures for glass and carbon fiber reinforced plastic waste from wind energy industry: A European case study

Valentin Sommer et al.

Summary: Establishing recycling and recovery infrastructures for innovative materials like high-performance composites is challenging, with the need for development of secondary markets and incentives for co-processing. Future recycling of CFRP depends on secondary markets, while GFRP is mainly combusted or co-processed. Political decision makers should focus on supporting the development of secondary markets and providing incentives for co-processing to overcome capacity limitations.

Ultrafast carbon nanotubes growth on recycled carbon fibers and their evaluation on interfacial shear strength in reinforced composites

A. Salas et al.

Summary: In this study, the impact of adding carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on the interlaminated resistance of recycled carbon fibers (RCFs) was investigated using thermolysis and Poptube techniques. The results demonstrate that CNTs can be successfully grown on RCFs and have a certain effect on reducing resistance.

Single carbon and glass fibre properties characterised using large data sets obtained through automated single fibre tensile testing

Francisco Mesquita et al.

Summary: Large amounts of data were collected on the mechanical properties of different fibers using automated testing equipment. Differences in Weibull modulus and stiffness were observed between fibers with the same nominal strength. Accurate determination of fiber strength parameters requires a high number of tests, while the stiffness of E-glass fiber was found to decrease with strain. Compliance calibration should be performed iteratively due to the non-linearity of fiber stress-strain diagrams.
