Phylogeography Reveals Association between Swine Trade and the Spread of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus in China and across the World

Wan-Ting He et al.

Summary: The ongoing SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has revealed gaps in our understanding of animal coronaviruses, including the porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV). This study analyzed PEDV sequence data and identified Guangdong and Henan provinces in China as primary hubs for PEDV spread. The United States and China were found to have the highest number of PEDV lineages globally. It was estimated that the United States played a significant role in introducing PEDV to other countries through live swine trade. The findings highlight the importance of prevention and containment measures for livestock coronaviruses due to the global trade of live swine.

Emergence of novel avian origin H7N9 viruses after introduction of H7-Re3 and rLN79 vaccine strains to China

Junhong Chen et al.

Summary: In early 2021, novel H7N9 variants of highly pathogenic avian influenza virus were found in live poultry markets in China, which current vaccines were unable to protect against. This highlights the need for enhanced surveillance and updating of vaccine strains to address potential outbreaks.

A dominant internal gene cassette of high pathogenicity avian influenza H7N9 virus raised since 2018

Dongchang He et al.

Summary: The circulating H7N9 avian influenza virus has established a dominant internal gene cassette and decreased the frequency of genetic reassortment with H9N2 since 2018. This dominant cassette may contribute to the continuous circulation of the virus in chicken populations.

H7N9 Influenza Virus in China

Chengjun Li et al.

Summary: In early 2013, human infections caused by a novel H7N9 avian influenza virus were first reported in China, which later evolved into highly pathogenic strains. Since 2017, nationwide vaccination of chickens has successfully controlled H7N9 avian influenza infections in poultry and prevented human infections.

Summary: Since the emergence of highly pathogenic H7N9 avian influenza virus in China in 2016, with at least 33 human infections, it has been primarily circulating in Northern China in recent years, with signs of parallel evolution and positive selection in the hemagglutinin gene.

Biological Characterization and Evolutionary Dynamics of Pigeon Paramyxovirus Type 1 in China

Tiansong Zhan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the evolutionary dynamics of PPMV-1 in East China, revealing its possible emergence in 1974 and identifying East China and South China as major epicenters for its dissemination. Analysis of selection pressure and amino acid substitutions indicated a potential relationship between the viral replication complex and the host preference of PPMV-1.

Genetic and biological properties of H7N9 avian influenza viruses detected after application of the H7N9 poultry vaccine in China

Xin Yin et al.

Summary: The H7N9 avian influenza virus has caused five waves of human infection in China, but further cases have been prevented since September 2017 through the use of a vaccine in poultry. However, the virus has not been eradicated from poultry, with genetic analysis revealing new genotypes and the potential for escape from vaccine-induced immunity. The antigenic differences identified between the 2019 H7N9 viruses and the vaccine strain used for control in poultry highlight ongoing challenges in evolution and control of the virus.

Accelerated Evolution of H7N9 Subtype Influenza Virus under Vaccination Pressure

Yifan Wu et al.

Summary: After the introduction of the H7N9 inactivated vaccine in 2017, low-pathogenic H7N9 strains decreased while highly-pathogenic H7N9 strains dominated. The 2019 H7N9 strains formed a separate genetic branch, distinct from strains isolated in previous years. The analysis suggested accelerated evolution of the H7N9 influenza virus subtype under vaccination pressure.

Genetic and antigenic diversity of H7N9 highly pathogenic avian influenza virus in China

Dongchang He et al.

Summary: The Avian Influenza Virus (AIV) H7N9 emerged in 2013 in Eastern China and has caused severe disease in humans in multiple waves, with highly pathogenic variants appearing in 2016. Studies show ongoing evolution in H7N9 AIV since 2017, with vaccination programs potentially intensifying natural selection. Enhanced surveillance is needed to understand the current situation of the virus.
