Multiple expansions of globally uncommon SARS-CoV-2 lineages in Nigeria

Egon A. Ozer et al.

Summary: SARS-CoV-2 genomic surveillance is crucial for understanding the viral population dynamics and identifying important variants. However, many regions, including Nigeria, have been under-sampled, leading to limited knowledge of circulating strains. This study sequenced 378 isolates from Nigeria and identified two locally important strains that are globally uncommon. The findings highlight the need for improved genomic surveillance worldwide.

Antibody escape and global spread of SARS-CoV-2 lineage A.27

Tamara Kaleta et al.

Summary: In spring 2021, an increasing number of infections caused by the rarely described SARS-CoV-2 variant A.27 were observed in southwest Germany. This variant, which shares some spike gene mutations with variants of concern but lacks the dominant D614G mutation, has spread globally and shows escape from convalescent and vaccine-induced immunity. Continued global monitoring is necessary due to the independent evolution of new escape mutations.

SARS-CoV-2 Circulation, Guinea, March 2020-July 2021

Solene Grayo et al.

Summary: This article provides an overview of the circulation of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 over 1.5 years in Guinea, indicating that different virus clades and variants of interest and concern were gradually introduced through travelers via Conakry and subsequently spread throughout the country. Sequencing plays a crucial role in tracking virus evolution and establishing effective control strategies.

Detection of a SARS-CoV-2 variant of concern in South Africa

Houriiyah Tegally et al.

Summary: The article describes a newly emerged lineage of SARS-CoV-2, 501Y.V2, characterized by eight mutations in the spike protein, which may result in increased transmissibility or immune escape. This lineage originated in South Africa and quickly became dominant in Eastern Cape, Western Cape, and KwaZuluNatal provinces within weeks.

Sixteen novel lineages of SARS-CoV-2 in South Africa

Houriiyah Tegally et al.

Summary: The study identified 16 new lineages of SARS-CoV-2 in South Africa between March and August 2020, with unique mutations not found elsewhere. Three lineages (B.1.1.54, B.1.1.56, and C.1) dominated during the country's first wave, accounting for approximately 42% of all infections. The C.1 lineage, with 16 nucleotide mutations including the D614G spike protein change, became the most geographically widespread by August 2020. Genomic surveillance played a crucial role in identifying the 501Y.V2 variant in South Africa in December 2020.

A year of genomic surveillance reveals how the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic unfolded in Africa

Eduan Wilkinson et al.

Summary: The progression of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in Africa has shown heterogeneous patterns, with many countries experiencing epidemics initiated mainly by imports from Europe. The implementation of early travel restrictions helped reduce this trend. However, ongoing transmission and increasing mobility within Africa have led to the emergence and spread of various concerning variants. This highlights the importance of not neglecting Africa in the global pandemic response to prevent it from becoming a source of new variants.

The biological and clinical significance of emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants

Kaiming Tao et al.

Summary: The emergence of multiple SARS-CoV-2 variants has significant impacts on the epidemiological and clinical aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic, including increased virus transmission rates, heightened risk of reinfection, and reduced effectiveness of neutralizing antibodies and vaccines. These variants have introduced new challenges to COVID-19 research, necessitating additional avenues of laboratory, epidemiological, and clinical studies.

Emergence and spread of a SARS-CoV-2 lineage A variant (A.23.1) with altered spike protein in Uganda

Daniel Lule Bugembe et al.

Summary: The SARS-CoV-2 variant A.23.1 emerged and became predominant in Uganda, showing amino acid changes in both the spike protein and non-spike proteins similar to other known variants of concern. While the clinical impact of the A.23.1 variant is still unclear and it has not been designated as a variant of concern, careful monitoring and assessment of its impact on COVID-19 vaccine efficacy are advisable.
