Expression and localization of apelin and apelin receptor (APJ) in buffalo ovarian follicles and corpus luteum and the in-vitro effect of apelin on steroidogenesis and survival of granulosa cells

Mahesh Gupta et al.

Summary: This study investigated the expression of apelin and its receptor APJ in ovarian follicles and corpora lutea, as well as the effects of apelin on steroidogenesis and cell survival. The results showed that apelin and APJ were expressed in granulosa and theca cells of follicles, as well as small and large luteal cells of corpora lutea. Furthermore, apelin was found to stimulate the production of estrogen and progesterone, and promote the survival of granulosa cells and luteal cells.

Apelin, APJ, and ELABELA: Role in Placental Function, Pregnancy, and Foetal Development-An Overview

Monika Dawid et al.

Summary: The apelinergic system, including the apelin receptor (APJ) and its specific ligands, plays an important role in regulating placental physiology and pregnancy. Imbalances in placental processes may lead to specific pregnancy pathologies, highlighting the need to find substances for early diagnosis or treatment.

Apelin and Apelin Receptor in Follicular Granulosa Cells of Buffalo Ovaries: Expression and Regulation of Steroidogenesis

Borhan Shokrollahi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the expression levels of APLN/APJ in buffalo ovarian granulose cells (GCs) and the effects of IGF1 and FSH on APLN/APJ expression. The results showed that APLN expression was highest in large-sized GCs, while APJ expression increased with follicle enlargement. IGF1 and FSH increased the expression of APLN and FSH, and IGF1 also increased the expression of APJ. Both isoforms of APLN increased the secretion of E2 and P4, potentially through upregulation of CYP19A1 and StAR expression. In conclusion, APLN may play a crucial role in steroidogenesis and follicular development in buffalo ovarian GCs.

Anti-Apoptotic Effect of Apelin in Human Placenta: Studies on BeWo Cells and Villous Explants from Third-Trimester Human Pregnancy

Ewa Mlyczynska et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated the antiapoptotic effect of apelin on trophoblast cells by regulating the expression of pro-survival and proapoptotic factors, as well as attenuating oxidative stress. This effect was mediated by the APJ receptor and specific signaling pathways like mitogen-activated protein kinase (ERK1/2/MAP3/1) and protein kinase B (AKT), suggesting the potential role of apelin in placental development.

Summary: Adipose tissue plays a significant role in mammalian reproduction by secreting adipokines that influence energy regulation, metabolism, and cardiovascular diseases. Studies have shown that adipokines are crucial for protecting the reproductive axis, promoting ovulation, and successful embryo implantation, with different adipokines having diverse functions in the reproductive system.
