A global dataset for prevalence of Salmonella Gallinarum between 1945 and 2021

Xiao Zhou et al.

Summary: This study presents a systematic review and meta-analysis of the global prevalence of Salmonella Gallinarum, which causes pullorum disease and fowl typhoid. The study found that pullorum disease is most common in Asia, especially in eastern China, and identified significant differences in the prevalence of S. Gallinarum based on factors such as gender, breed, raising mode, economic use, and growth stage of the chickens. Vertical transmission plays a critical role in the spread of this disease.

A nontyphoidal Salmonella serovar domestication accompanying enhanced niche adaptation

Yan Li et al.

Summary: The study investigates the emergence of invasive nontyphoidal Salmonella in China and identifies the international animal feed trade as a likely vehicle for its introduction. The results highlight the importance of genomics in uncovering international transmission and the emergence of hypervirulent strains with increased antibiotic resistance.

Characterization of Two-Component System CitB Family in Salmonella Pullorum

Xiamei Kang et al.

Summary: Salmonella enterica, serovar Gallinarum biovar Pullorum is a pathogen specific to avians, causing significant economic losses in the poultry industry globally. The study analyzed the genome of S. Pullorum strain S06004 and identified 22 pairs of two-component systems (TCSs) belonging to five families. The role of the CitB family in S. Pullorum pathogenesis was investigated using mutants generated through the CRISPR/Cas9 system. It was found that the CitB family does not affect bacterial growth, biochemical properties, invasion, proliferation, or fimbrial protein expression. However, the mutants showed enhanced biofilm formation, antimicrobial resistance, inhibition tolerance, and virulence in chicken embryos. Deletion of the Dpi TCS had detrimental effects on survival in hyperosmotic and oxidative environments, as well as long-term colonization of the chicken small intestine.

The role of two-component regulatory systems in environmental sensing and virulence in Salmonella

Lucindo Cardoso de Pina et al.

Summary: Adaptation to constantly changing environments is a challenge for bacteria, requiring sophisticated strategies to perceive and respond appropriately. The gastrointestinal environment houses trillions of microorganisms, collectively known as microbiota, which play key roles in host health and pathogen resistance. Bacteria, including Salmonella enterica, utilize two-component systems to monitor their environment and regulate behavior, with potential as targets for antivirulence therapeutics against antibiotic-resistant infections.

Effects of environmental conditions (temperature, pH, and glucose) on biofilm formation of Salmonella enterica serotype Kentucky and virulence gene expression

Pantu Kumar Roy et al.

Summary: Higher temperatures (25 to 42 degrees C) and pH values (7.0 and 8.0) led to more robust biofilm formation than lower temperatures (4 and 10 degrees C) and lower pH levels (4.0 to 6.0). Biofilm formation was induced by 0.025% glucose during incubation at the optimum temperature (37 degrees C) and pH (7.0) but inhibited by 0.4% glucose.

Impact of the Resistance Responses to Stress Conditions Encountered in Food and Food Processing Environments on the Virulence and Growth Fitness of Non-Typhoidal Salmonellae

Silvia Guillen et al.

Summary: The success of Salmonella as a foodborne pathogen can be attributed to its genetic diversity and adaptability, allowing it to survive in harsh conditions and cause disease. However, the development of stress resistance may come with a fitness cost for bacterial cells and can trigger changes in Salmonella virulence.

The combined effect of stressful factors (temperature and pH) on the expression of biofilm, stress, and virulence genes in Salmonella enterica ser. Enteritidis and Typhimurium

Fereshteh Badie et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the combined effects of temperature and pH on the expression of biofilm, stress, and virulence genes in Salmonella Enteritidis and Salmonella Typhimurium. The findings indicated that temperature and pH did not have a significant effect on the gene expression levels in these Salmonella strains.

Interaction of Salmonella Gallinarum and Salmonella Enteritidis with peripheral leucocytes of hens with different laying performance

Sravya Sreekantapuram et al.

Summary: The study compared the interactions of SE and SG with immune cells in blood samples of White Leghorn chicken lines of different laying performance using an ex vivo chicken whole blood infection model. The findings showed a stronger interaction of monocytes with SE and better survivability of Salmonella in blood of low-producing chickens. This suggests that host-pathogen interaction and immune defense strength depend on both the Salmonella serovar and the chicken line.
