Serial analysis of blood biomarker concentrations in dogs with pneumonia, septic peritonitis, and pyometra

Robert Goggs et al.

Summary: Biomarker concentrations in dogs undergoing treatment for pulmonary and intra-abdominal infections were investigated. Concentrations of certain biomarkers normalized within 7 to 14 days, which could aid in disease resolution identification and guide antimicrobial drug prescription decision-making.

Investigation of procalcitonin and beta-defensin2 in the serum and feces of dogs with acute diarrhea

Stephan Neumann et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate procalcitonin (PCT) and beta-defensin2 (Bdef2) as biomarkers for disease severity, course, and prognosis of dogs with acute diarrhea. The results showed that dogs with acute diarrhea had higher serum PCT concentrations and lower fecal Bdef2 concentrations. Serum PCT was moderately and positively related to the extent of disease. Dogs with specific pathogens had increased serum Bdef2 concentrations. Serum PCT and fecal Bdef2 quotient could be used to differentiate between different disease courses.
