Effective hydrogen generation using water-n-hexane-ZrO2 system: Effect of temperature and radiation irradiation time

Imran Ali et al.

Summary: The production of economic green hydrogen fuel is in high demand. In this study, hydrogen generation by water radiolysis of a hexane-water system on ZrO2 surface was investigated at different temperatures. The radiation-catalytic decomposition of hexane-water increased at high temperatures and resulted in an increase in hydrogen production. At a temperature of 673 K, a chain mode conversion of the key products of hexane-water led to molecular hydrogen. The maximum yield of hydrogen achieved was 188.5 molecule/100 eV with the n-ZrO2 + C6H14(ads)-water (0.003 g: 0.0051 g: 0.0015 g) system at 673 K.

Effects of swift heavy ions at different fluencies on WC-6Co hard metal alloy

Ertugrul Demir et al.

Summary: This study investigates the microstructural evolution of tungsten carbide hard metal alloy with 6% cobalt before and after irradiation at different fluencies. The results show that irradiation breaks the bonding between tungsten and oxygen atoms, causing complete deoxidation of the surface. Irradiation also leads to amorphization of the carbon phase on the surface and penetration of molecular nitrogen from the atmosphere into the carbon matrix. X-ray and neutron diffraction reveal that the main phase in the material is delta-WC, and increasing fluence results in an increase in compressive internal stress. Positron lifetime spectroscopy measurements indicate the presence of small vacancy clusters, and the intensities of different positron lifetime components vary non-monotonically with irradiation dose.

Temperature-induced wear transition in ceramic-metal composites

Ming Lou et al.

Summary: The study focused on investigating the wear behavior of a ceramic-metal composite (high Mn steel + 50 wt.% TiC) under different temperatures and atmospheres. A critical temperature of around 125 degrees C was observed, marking a transition in wear mechanisms from hardness dominance to toughness dominance. The competitive micro-mechanisms of surface decarburization and toughening of ceramic particles were delineated, providing interpretation of the wear behavior of ceramic-metal composites.
