First-principles study on the structures and elastic properties of W-Ta-V ternary alloys

Hongjing Cui et al.

Summary: By investigating the structures and elastic properties of ternary W-Ta-V alloys, it was found that the elastic properties generally decrease with the addition of Ta and V, but the ductility of W is effectively improved. Electronic structure analysis showed that alloying Ta and V enhances the metallicity of W, and the types and strength of bonds influence the stability and elastic modulus of the alloys.

First-principles investigation of mechanical properties, elastic anisotropy, and ultralow lattice thermal conductivities of ductile Mg-Bi alloys

Yingying Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, the crystal structures, mechanical properties, anisotropic properties, and lattice thermal conductivities of Mg-Bi alloys were investigated using particle swarm optimization structure prediction method and first-principles calculations. The results predicted a novel stable stoichiometry of Mg4Bi in addition to the well-known stoichiometry of Mg3Bi2, as well as several metastable stoichiometries. The Mg-Bi alloys exhibited ductility and obvious anisotropic characters. Furthermore, the minimum lattice thermal conductivities of MgBi and Mg2Bi were found to be smaller than that of Mg3Bi2, and the adsorption of O atom on the Mg3Bi (001) surface was more sensitive than on other surfaces.

Tensile deformation behavior and generalized stacking fault energy surface ofγ-Fe23C6 by atomistic modelling

Fangfang Xia et al.

Summary: To investigate the fatigue behavior of steel or Ni-based superalloy, this study investigates the effects of temperature, vacancies, and void on the mechanical properties of M23C6 carbides using the molecular dynamics method. Additionally, the slip system that is most conducive to dislocation activity for M23C6 type carbides is identified based on the generalized stacking fault energy (GSFE) model. The results indicate that cleavage fracture is more likely to occur along the [110] direction for Fe23C6 and that void size affects the tensile stress curve along the [100] direction but has little effect on the stress curve along [110] and [111] directions.

First-principles calculations to investigate pressure effect on structural, elastic and thermodynamic properties of AlCu, Al2Cu and Al4Cu9

Chan Wang et al.

Summary: The structural, elastic and thermodynamic properties of AlCu, Al2Cu, and Al(4)Cu(9) were investigated under pressure using a first-principles approach. The results showed that the volume ratio and equilibrium lattice constants decreased with increasing pressure. Al(4)Cu(9) exhibited the highest structural stability, while AlCu and Al2Cu showed increasing resistance to deformation with pressure. AlCu and Al(4)Cu(9) were found to be stiffer than Al2Cu, and AlCu transformed from brittle to ductile above 15 GPa. The microhardness of AlCu was larger than that of Al2Cu and Al4Cu9, indicating its classification as a 'hard material'. The Debye temperature suggested that the covalent bonds of AlCu were the strongest, and the heat capacity of Al2Cu was stronger than that of AlCu and Al4Cu9.

Min Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, the electronic, elastic, and thermodynamic properties of ternary magnesium-based alloys LaMgRe4 (Re = Co, Ni, Cu) were investigated using first-principles based density functional theory (DFT). The results showed that these alloys have stable formation enthalpy and conform to mechanical and dynamic stability.

Generalized stacking fault energies and critical resolved shear stresses of random α-Ti-Al alloys from first-principles calculations

Hui Yu et al.

Summary: The CRSS and plastic deformation of titanium with HCP structure are highly anisotropic, alloying affects the CRSS, and rational composition design can improve mechanical properties. Prediction of CRSS is challenging due to atomic randomness of the alloy, and first-principles methods are used in this study to calculate GSFEs for Ti-Al alloys and evaluate CRSS within a Peierls-Nabarro model framework. Increasing Al concentration in the alloy impacts the GSFE and CRSS, which successfully explains the measured mechanical properties of the alloy.

Improved Peierls-Nabarro model for asymmetric nonplanar 1/2<110] {111} screw dislocations in L10 alloys

Xiangsheng Hu et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the ordinary 1/2 < 1<(1)over bar> 0]{111} screw dislocation in L1(0) alloys, revealing its nonplanar core structure and the change in stress field under increasing applied stress. The improved P-N model accurately predicts the Peierls stress and provides more accurate results compared to the original model.

Effect of alloying elements on stacking fault energy and ductility of iron

J. Zhao et al.

Summary: The first-principles calculations showed that Cr and Mo have a negligible effect on BCC Fe, while Pb and Bi considerably reduce its ductility and surface energy, leading to brittleness. This decrease in surface energy is much more pronounced than the decrease in unstable stacking fault energy, which contributes to the observed brittleness of Fe47Pb and Fe47Bi.
