Detection of microwave ablation coagulation areas using ultrasound Nakagami imaging based on Gaussian pyramid decomposition: A feasibility study

Sinan Li et al.

Summary: In this paper, the feasibility of using ultrasound Nakagami-m parametric imaging based on Gaussian pyramid decomposition (GPD) to detect microwave ablation coagulation areas was explored. The study found that a 2-layer GPD model achieved similar accuracy, smoothness, and resolution as more complex models. The GPD algorithm outperformed other algorithms in terms of parameter estimation, smoothness, resolution, and contrast-to-noise ratio.

Ultrasound Entropy Imaging for Detection and Monitoring of Thermal Lesion During Microwave Ablation of Liver

Xiejing Li et al.

Summary: This study introduced Shannon entropy as a quantitative measurement to detect and monitor microwave-induced ablation. Weighted Shannon entropy (WSE) and horizontally normalized Shannon entropy (hNSE) showed better performance compared to conventional B-mode imaging, providing more accurate prediction of ablated area and significant lesion-normal contrast.

Ultrasound single-phase CBE imaging for monitoring radiofrequency ablation of the liver tumor: A preliminary clinical validation

Chiao-Yin Wang et al.

Summary: Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is an alternative treatment for early-stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). This study used ultrasound single-phase CBE imaging to monitor RFA of liver tumors by analyzing the backscattering of ultrasound from gas bubbles. The results showed that single-phase CBE imaging provides information about liver tumor size and can help determine the minimum RFA efficacy level.

A Review of Quantitative Ultrasound-Based Approaches to Thermometry and Ablation Zone Identification Over the Past Decade

Sinan Li et al.

Summary: This paper presents a review of nine quantitative ultrasound-based methods for thermal therapy monitoring and their advances over the last decade since 2011. These methods were analyzed and compared with respect to two applications: ultrasonic thermometry and ablation zone identification. The advantages and limitations of these methods were compared and discussed, and future developments were suggested.

Monitoring microwave ablation using ultrasound homodyned K imaging based on the noise-assisted correlation algorithm: An ex vivo study

Shuang Song et al.

Summary: The study proposed a new ultrasound homodyned K imaging method based on the noise-assisted correlation algorithm for monitoring microwave ablation of porcine liver tissue. Experimental results demonstrated that the method, combined with polynomial approximation technique, showed high accuracy and feasibility in quantitatively evaluating the coagulation zone.

Image-guided microwave ablation of hepatocellular carcinoma (≤5.0 cm): is MR guidance more effective than CT guidance?

Zhaonan Li et al.

Summary: This study compared the efficacy of CT-guided and MR-guided microwave ablation for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC <= 5.0cm). The results showed that both therapies were comparable in terms of survival, but MR-guided MWA could reduce the incidence of complications.
