Evidence, Challenges, and Knowledge Gaps Regarding Latent Tuberculosis in Animals

Pamela Ncube et al.

Summary: Mycobacterium bovis and other Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) pathogens causing animal tuberculosis have received less attention compared to M. tuberculosis, the main cause of human tuberculosis. This review discusses the evidence, challenges, and knowledge gaps regarding latent tuberculosis (LTB) in animals and the possible differences in host-pathogen interactions between M. tuberculosis and M. bovis. The review also explores potential models from human TB research to investigate how different phenotypic states of bacteria could influence TB stages in animals.

Cell-Mediated Immunological Biomarkers and Their Diagnostic Application in Livestock and Wildlife Infected With Mycobacterium bovis

Katrin Smith et al.

Summary: Mycobacterium bovis infects a wide range of animal species, posing threats to livestock and wildlife industries. Improved detection methods are crucial for early diagnosis of M. bovis in affected animal populations. Cell-mediated immunity (CMI) plays a central role in the development of diagnostic tests for M. bovis infection.

Spatiotemporal distribution and temporal trends of brucellosis and tuberculosis in water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) in Brazil

David Germano Gonsalves Schwarz et al.

Summary: The distribution of brucellosis and tuberculosis in buffalo herds in Brazil is heterogeneous, with well-defined regions of high risk of infection. There is a need for disease control measures in regions like Amazonas, Para, Amapa, and Minas Gerais due to the higher risk of infection for both diseases.
