Modeling and prediction of fire occurrences along an elevational gradient in Western Himalayas

Somnath Bar et al.

Summary: This study aims to model forest fire occurrences and quantify the contribution of explanatory variables using historical fire data and machine learning classifiers. It was found that elevation, mean neighbor elevation, and near-surface temperatures have the highest influence on forest fire occurrences. Future climate projections were used to predict forest fire susceptibility for 2030, 2040, and 2050, which can help plan effective fire management strategies.

Modeling forest fire risk based on GIS-based analytical hierarchy process and statistical analysis in Mediterranean region

Fatih Sivrikaya et al.

Summary: This study proposed an integrated approach to generating a forest fire risk map, which was validated in the eastern Mediterranean region of Turkey. The findings showed that the study area is highly prone to forest fires, and the accuracy of the fire risk map was high and reliable. This will assist decision makers in taking necessary precautions to minimize fire damage.

Anthropogenic interventions regulate forest structure and carbon stock in transitional dry forests of Similipal Biosphere Reserve, India

Manas R. Mohanta et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of human interventions and soil properties on forest structure and carbon storage in a tropical dry forest area in Similipal Biosphere Reserve, India. The results show that adult trees are the main contributors to carbon stocks, and anthropogenic disturbances and edaphic factors play a significant role in the variation of carbon storage in the forest.

Influence of drought duration and severity on drought recovery period for different land cover types: evaluation using MODIS-based indices

Amin Fathi-Taperasht et al.

Summary: Drought duration and severity affect the recovery period of different land use and land cover types in Iran, with shrublands and croplands experiencing longer droughts and recovery times compared to forests. There is a direct relationship between drought severity and recovery period, however, the correlation between drought duration and recovery time varies geographically.

Pixel-Based Long-Term (2001-2020) Estimations of Forest Fire Emissions over the Himalaya

Somnath Bar et al.

Summary: Forest fires are a severe catastrophe that has been increasing in intensity due to global warming. This study estimates the emissions from forest fires in the Himalaya region, with higher emissions detected in the eastern Himalaya and southern regions of Nepal. The trend of forest fire emissions shows a significant positive trend from 2001 to 2010, and a negative trend from 2011 to 2020.

Forest Fire Induced Air Pollution over Eastern India during March 2021

Rajesh Kumar Sahu et al.

Summary: Forest fires, as significant contributors to atmospheric CO2, are considered a threat to terrestrial ecosystems affecting climate change. This study combines in-situ and earth observation platforms to investigate a sporadic forest fire event in Similipal National Park and its adjacent areas in eastern India in March 2021, and its impact on the surrounding atmosphere. The analysis reveals a significant increase in Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) during this period, along with anomalies in carbon monoxide (CO) and ozone (O-3). PM2.5 surface concentration increased by approximately 12 μg/m3. Additionally, AOD spiked by about 56.21% during the fire episode. The intensity of pollutants (except NO2) was directly proportional to the number of fires spreading across the northern part of the region. The study also calculated the amount of CO2 emitted using an emission index and compared it to changes in atmospheric XCO2 concentrations retrieved from OCO-2 during the fire episode.

Summary: The study revealed an increasing trend of fire occurrence and concentration of burned area over a shorter period in the Western Himalayan region. Evergreen needleleaf forests were identified as a hotspot for fires, with moderate correlations between climatic variables and global climate oscillation indices with fire activity.
