Thermal Friction Enhancement in Zwitterionic Monolayers

Melisa M. Gianetti et al.

Summary: We introduce a model for zwitterionic monolayers and study their tribological response to changes in load, velocity, and temperature using molecular-dynamics simulations. The model shows different motion regimes depending on temperature and velocity. Friction increases remarkably with temperature due to the formation and rupture of transient bonds between sliding layers caused by thermal fluctuations of molecular orientations. Comparing with simulations of charge-free systems highlights the effect of molecular charges. These findings are important for nanoscale rheology and tribology experiments on locally-charged lubricated systems.

A molecular dynamics study on the synergistic lubrication mechanisms of graphene/water-based lubricant systems

Chenjie Li et al.

Summary: Water-based lubricants with graphene exhibit excellent lubrication performance, with the friction reduction attributed to the enhanced isolation between friction pairs by graphene presence and improved water replenishment. The synergistic lubrication mechanism involves water molecules protecting graphene's structural integrity by inducing movement to release lateral stresses, and graphene enhancing water molecule movement to promote rolling like bearings.

Electronic friction and tuning on atomically thin MoS2

Bin Shi et al.

Summary: This study investigates and regulates the friction and dissipation on atomically thin MoS2 by tuning the carrier concentration. The electronic contribution to energy dissipation during the friction process was confirmed and regulated through gate-modulation. The research provides a utility approach to tune the friction intelligently on semiconductive two-dimensional materials and achieve superlubric properties.

Effect of water film on the nano-scratching process of 4H-SiC under the constant load

Yuqi Zhou et al.

Summary: The effects of water film and scratching load on tribological properties were investigated using molecular dynamics simulation. The results showed that water film reduces the friction coefficient and enhances heat dissipation during scratching. The presence of water film inhibits the formation of dislocations by affecting the formation of Si-Si bonds. Scratching in a water-wetted environment improves surface quality and reduces sub-surface damage, but negatively affects material removal rate. The effect of increasing load is opposite to that of adding water.

Interfacial Forces in Free-Standing Layers of Melted Polyethylene, from Critical to Nanoscopic Thicknesses

Fernando Iguazu Ramirez-Zavaleta et al.

Summary: Molecular dynamics simulations were used to investigate the pressure forces shaping the conformation of polyethylene chains in ultra-thin free-standing layers. It was found that the chains were slightly stretched and the contributions of bond vibrations to pressure were greater than interchain interactions. The interchain interactions resulted in noncohesive interfacial regions that were independent of temperature. The predicted surface tension values were consistent with experimental results and were not dependent on layer thickness, while the real interfacial thickness was dependent on layer thickness.

Summary: This study investigates the stability of porous MoS2 nanotubes and compares it with macroscopic MoS2 flakes through molecular dynamics simulations. The results show that the nanotubes exhibit good stability and are influenced by factors such as the size of the area of full-covered layers, number of layers, polytype, and size of holes in the flakes.

Empirical relationship between interfacial shear stress and contact pressure in micro- and macro-scale friction

Xin He et al.

Summary: This study investigates the empirical relationship between frictional shear stress and pressure in macro- and microscale contact and sliding. Two types of friction tests were conducted, with results confirming that interfacial shear stress due to kinetic friction is proportional to average contact pressure, further validating Amontons' law.

Adhesion and friction in hard and soft contacts: theory and experiment

Valentin L. Popov et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on analyzing adhesive contacts under tangential motion, addressing the phenomenon of unstable movement of the contact boundary and its relation to surface roughness. It discusses how friction due to adhesion instabilities affects energy dissipation and effective works of adhesion. The study considers contributions to friction from boundary lines and contact area, with simulations and experiments showing different behaviors in small, smooth contacts versus large soft contacts.

Mechanical and viscoelastic properties of wrinkled graphene reinforced polymer nanocomposites - Effect of interlayer sliding within graphene sheets

Yitao Wang et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the effects of different numbers of graphene layers and various wrinkle configurations on the mechanical properties and viscoelastic properties of nanocomposites through molecular dynamics simulations. The results showed that the elastic modulus of the nanocomposites increased with decreasing degree of waviness and increasing numbers of layers. Certain wrinkled MLGS-reinforced nanocomposites exhibited a sudden stress drop during shear deformation and peculiarly large loss tangents during small amplitude oscillatory shear simulations.

Effects of surface nanostructure on boundary lubrication using molecular dynamics

Ling Pan et al.

Summary: Molecular dynamics simulations were used to study the boundary lubrication behaviors of squalane lubricant between two iron wall structures during shearing at different pressures and temperatures. The results showed that the surface nanostructure significantly affected the film thickness and delamination of the lubricating film but had little impact on the velocity distribution, while the nano strip groove helped reduce the friction coefficient of the boundary lubrication system.

Atomistic tribological investigation of ultrathin layer of carbon disulfide between diamond surfaces

Alexei Khomenko et al.

Summary: The tribological properties of a single molecular layer of liquid carbon disulfide, squeezed between two atomically smooth diamond surfaces, were studied using classical molecular dynamics. Increasing external pressure causes the film to transition to a solid-like state, as evidenced by a decrease in diffusion constant and changes in velocity autocorrelation function and average friction force of the liquid molecules.
