In addition to glycerophospholipids, bacterial membranes commonly contain amino acid-containing acyloxyacyl lipids. The functional significance of these aminolipids is not well understood. However, a recent study by Stirrup et al. sheds light on their importance as major determinants for membrane properties and the relative abundance of distinct membrane proteins in bacteria.
In addition to glycerophospholipids, bacterial membranes often include amino acid-containing acyloxyacyl lipids. The functional implications of these aminolipids are largely un-known. However, a recent study by Stirrup et al. expands our under-standing and shows that they are major determinants for membrane properties and the relative abun-dance of distinct membrane pro-teins in bacterial membranes.
