Soil microbiomes and one health

Bacteroidota structure in the face of varying agricultural practices as an important indicator of soil quality - a culture independent approach

Summary: The choice of agricultural practices has a significant impact on soil quality, crop productivity, and bacterial community structure. This study aimed to investigate the effects of different agricultural practices and changing seasons on Bacteroidota structure. Statistical analysis revealed that agricultural practices and seasons have an influence on the abundance of Bacteroidota. Crop rotation was identified as the best agricultural practice with the highest abundance of Bacteroidota and the highest average yield.

Summary: Our understanding of the size of genomes in Archaea and Bacteria has been biased due to the dominance of cultivated microorganisms in laboratory settings. However, the recent efforts to study uncultivated microorganisms through the cataloging of Earth's microbiomes allow us to revise our perspective on genome size distribution. In our meta-analysis, we found that aquatic and host-associated microbial genomes have the smallest estimated sizes, followed by terrestrial microbial genomes and genomes from isolated microorganisms. The study also highlights the similarities in genome size between metagenomic assembled genomes and isolate genomes.

Metabolomics and bioactivity-driven NP discovery on 25 Chitinophaga strains confirmed the predicted biosynthetic potential and uncovered a vast unexplored chemical space. This study isolated new antibiotics called chitinopeptins with activity against Candida, highlighting the importance of mining underinvestigated microbial taxa for future screening and isolation campaigns.
