Morphometrical characteristics of cryptic invasive and indigenous gene pools of field maple Acer campestre L. in southern Sweden

Eric Wahlsteen

Summary: The northernmost population of Acer campestre L. in southern Sweden consists of only 36 individuals, but is critically endangered. The use of geometric morphometrics by landmarks can help distinguish between native and introduced gene pools.

SSR markers distinguish critically endangered Acer campestre populations from cryptic invading gene pools

Eric Wahlsteen

Summary: The native population of Acer campestre in southern Scandinavia is critically endangered, with a unique genetic diversity representing almost extinct genetic diversity of the early 19th century. The population does not suffer from inbreeding, but is recommended to preserve genetic material through ex situ grafting and introduction of carefully chosen individuals from related gene pools.
