A study of vertical tie reaction forces in ballasted railroad tracks through field instrumentation and numerical modeling

Md Fazle Rabbi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the factors affecting vertical tie reaction forces in ballasted railroad tracks using a combined approach of field instrumentation and numerical modeling. The results show that the strain gauge method is an accurate way to measure tie reaction forces, while proper installation is crucial to avoid boundary effects.

Numerical analysis of train-track-subgrade dynamic performance with crumb rubber in ballast layer

Yunlong Guo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of using crumb rubber (CR) in the ballast layer on the dynamic performance of train and ballast layer. The results show that CR can increase the accelerations of sleeper, rail and train, but decrease the ballast degradation and subgrade surface stress. Small size CR has a greater influence on the system's dynamic performance and is more effective in improving sleeper displacement, subgrade stress, and ballast bed stress.

Effect of Ballast Degradation on Track Dynamic Behavior Using Discrete Element Modeling

Zhongyi Liu et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the impact of ballast degradation on track substructure maintenance needs. By simulating the behavior of new and degraded ballast using single crosstie models, it was found that degraded ballast led to increased crosstie vibrations, a higher number of force chains, and inconsistent force distribution.

Coupled discrete-continuum approach for railway ballast track and subgrade macro-meso analysis

Can Shi et al.

Summary: This paper presents a multi-layer railway ballast track and substructure model, using a coupled discrete and continuous method for dynamic behavior analysis. The model achieves compatibility by satisfying displacement, velocity, and contact force between systems, and is validated through numerical analysis and field measurements.

A Validated Train-Track-Bridge Model with Nonlinear Support Conditions at Bridge Approaches

Wenting Hou et al.

Summary: This study introduces an advanced train-track-bridge model that is validated using field instrumentation data collected from the track substructure of US Amtrak's Northeast Corridor railroad track bridge approaches. The model is used to simulate typical track transient responses, showing that locations near the bridge experience larger transient deformations.
