Supplier Encroachment, Information Sharing, and Channel Structure in Online Retail Platforms

Albert Y. Ha et al.

Summary: The study uses a game-theoretic model to analyze the encroachment and information sharing decisions by a manufacturer in a supply chain, finding that these decisions are complementary. It demonstrates that the decision to encroach can impact information sharing, highlighting the need for managers to consider the relationship between the two decisions.

Should platforms be allowed to sell on their own marketplaces?

Andrei Hagiu et al.

Summary: A growing number of digital platforms operate in a dual mode, but banning this practice may harm consumer surplus and welfare. In practice, policies that prevent platform imitation and self-preferencing may be better than an outright ban on the dual mode.

PLATFORM ENCROACHMENT AND OWN-CONTENT BIAS

Yusuke Zennyo

Summary: This paper presents a model of platform encroachment, in which a platform acts as an intermediary between consumers and third-party sellers, while also selling its own products. The platform has the choice to use fair or biased search engines when encroaching. Biased encroachment leads to lower commission rates imposed on sellers, resulting in lower prices that attract more consumers. Increased consumer participation can indirectly increase seller participation through network externalities.

Platform Operations With Consumer Returns Windows: Reselling Mode Versus Marketplace Mode

Xiaoping Xu et al.

Summary: In this article, the operational decisions of manufacturers are analyzed in the context of consumer returns, specifically focusing on the consumer returns window (CRW). The study explores the optimal production quantities and profits under different scenarios, considering both exogenous and endogenous CRW situations. It is revealed that factors such as product-consumer fitness, commission rate, and marketplace relative efficiency (MRE) have significant impacts on the decision-making process and outcomes. Additionally, the preference for the marketplace mode or reselling mode varies depending on the CRW scenario.

Xiaoping Xu et al.

Summary: This paper examines a supply chain where the manufacturer sells products through both offline and online channels under cap-and-trade regulation. The cross-channel effect and platform power can benefit the manufacturer and online platform. The use of blockchain technology can increase consumer surplus depending on the cross-channel effect, and different selling modes may have different impacts on profits.

Information Sharing in an Online Marketplace with Co-opetitive Sellers

Guo Li et al.

Summary: The study explores the importance of information sharing in the e-commerce environment among online marketplaces, manufacturers, and retailers. Online marketplaces tend to prefer full information sharing or sharing information only with manufacturers based on competition intensity and demand variability; manufacturers prefer full information sharing, while retailers choose whether to share demand information with online marketplaces or manufacturers depending on the specific situation.

Competition and Distortion: A Theory of Information Bias on the Peer-to-Peer Lending Market

Zhenhua Wu et al.

Summary: This paper examines the market incentives of P2P lending platforms, finding that platforms have incentives to bias information toward investors' biased beliefs when uncertainty is significant and competition from entrants is strong but not detrimental. Competition and uncertainty may jointly lead to information bias, but a properly designed uncertainty-resolution mechanism could reduce the incentive. Our findings contribute to the literature on the P2P lending market by analyzing platform decisions and offering policy implications for regulating P2P lending market.

Platform Supported Supply Chain Operations in the Blockchain Era: Supply Contracting and Moral Hazards*

Ya-Jun Cai et al.

Summary: Platform operations are common in the sharing economy, allowing retailers to sell leftover products to platforms offering rental services. However, these operations can lead to a triple marginalization problem, which can be addressed with a markdown sponsor contract but may also result in a moral hazard problem. This moral hazard problem can bring losses to manufacturers and immoral gains to retailers.
